Second-Hand Brick Only-Half as Safe, Test Demonstrates That walls of second-hand brick will stand only half as well —and half as safely—as those built of new and unused bricks has just been demonstrated by researches of the engineering ex- periment station of the Univer- sity of New Hampshire at Dur- ham, N. H. Exhaustive and highly practical laboratory tests on more than 10,000 bricks dur- ing a period of two years reveal that mortar clings only half as well to second-hand brick as to the virgin product of the kiln. According to station authori- ties, brick have pores, and it is into these pores that the mortar penetrates to make a perfect “bond” or joint between them. Brick once used has had these pores filled and they cannot be filled again nor can the pores be cleansed. Some pores may not have been filled at the first lay- ing of the brick, and these, unless otherwise filled by dust, soot or weathering, may take some mor- tar the second time,-but com- pared to new brick, there is only a fifty-fifty chance of a good bond.
