B—14 Bedtime Stories BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. ge has advantage of the rest learns to use his wit the best. Blacky the Crow. EDDY FOX had found the mus- sel or clam that Rattles the Kingfisher had dropped near the Laughing Brook. Reddy knew that clam was good to eat, but he didn’t know just how to go about opening it. You see, the shell was shut tight. If Jerry Muskrat had been there he could have shown Reddy just how to go about it. Jerry is an expert in opening clams. You will often find little piles of empty shells around one ©of Jerry's favorite eating places. While Reddy was still sitting looking @t that clam, who should fly overhead but Blacky the Crow. Blacky's eyes REDDY LOOKED UP AND GRIN- NED AS ONLY REDDY CAN. are sharp. There are none sharper.‘ He saw Reddy and he also saw and | recognized what Reddy was looking at. | Blacky alighted in the top of the tree | @above Reddy. | “‘Good morning, Brother Fox,” said | Blacky. “I hope you like this cold | weather.” | Reddy looked up and grinned as | only Reddy can. “I like it,” said he, “just about as much as you do and in | about the same way. When I have plenty to eat I like it first rate. When I have little to eat I don't like it at all. It takes a full stomach to keep | one comfortably warm.” “True, Brother, true,” replied | Blacky. “I sometimes wonder why I | stay around here in cold weather. It | is hard pickings sometimes, Brother | Fox; it is hard pickings.” “Don't I know it?” replied Reddy. *“You are lucky, only you don't know it.” | “No,” said Blacky, “I don't know it. | How am I lucky? I really would like | to know how I am lucky.” “You are lucky because you can cover so much territory in a day,” re- plied Reddy. “You can fly a good | deal easier and a good deal faster than I can run, and while you are flying you can look down with those sharp eyes of yours and see anything that | may be good to eat. Whereas, if you had to hunt for it on foot, as I do, you wouldn’t be able to see it unless you happened to come close to it.” | “What is that thing at your feet there that you seem so much interested in?” asked Blacky in the most inno- cent manner. Reddy loked up at him and grinned | again. “Just as if you didn’t know,” | said he. “It looks like a clam,” said Blacky, “but what would a clam be doing out on the bank at this time of year un- | less Jerry Muskrat has been along and left it.” | “Can you imagine Jerry Muskrat leaving a clam?” asked Reddy. | “No I can't,” replied Blacky, shak- ing his head. “I wonder what a clam | tastes like. I wonder how Jerry man- eges to get those shells open.” | “So do L” replied Reddy. “There must be a trick to it. I don't know | of any way of getting at that clam ex- cepting by crushing it with my teeth and I don’t like to do that; the shell is too hard.” “I know a trick that would open that clam,” said Blacky. | “What is that trick?” asked Reddy | eagerly. Blacky looked down at Reddy quiz- gically. “What would you do for me | if I should tell you?” he asked. | “I would share with you the first | good meal I got, if you happened to be around,” replied Reddy. | “I don't like that if,” said Blacky. | “However, as long as you have that e i b Sonnysayings Don't look 50 empty-faced.
