RECESSION SEEN AT STEEL PLANTS Institute Estimates Week’s Operations to Average 55.7 Per Cent. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 9.—The American Iron & Steel Institute esti- mates steel production during the current week at 55.7 per cent of ca- pficlty‘ compared with 56.4 per cent preceding week. A mnnth ago production was at the rate of 52.6 per cent of capacity, and & year ago it was 32.7 per cent. The moderate recession in produc- tion does not, in the opinion of steel trade authorities, point to any im- portant change of trend in the in- dustry. Since early in October, with pro- duction holding consistently above 50 per cent, the industry has experienced only three minor declines in produc- tion, ineluding that estimated for the current week. Special Dispatch to The Star. DETROIT, Mich., December 9.—Re- turn to a five-day basis after the ‘Thanksgiving holiday week accounted for a marked rise in the weekly pro- duction of motor vehicles in the United States and Canada. The out- put for the week was 93,180 units, about 10,000 more than last week's total, according to Cram’s Reports, Inc, of this city. This compares with 19,347 units produced a year ago, when most plants were just beginning production on their new models. Retail sales of new models con- tinues at an accelerated rate, several companies having recorded all-time record sales for November, It appears that Christmas buying of new cars will be a very definite factor toward further stimulation of sales for the | first time in several years. December production will continue at a high rate, according to present indications, and the probabilities are that an all-time record will be set. Shortages of most materials seem to be becoming less acute at the present time than has been the case for seve | eral weeks. U. S. TREASURY POSITION.
