Washington Wayside Random Observati Events an SHOW'S THE THING. HE show's the thing, Shake- I speare once said, and most of the successes of conteraporary life prove the accuracy of such @ theory. The rule applies to small successes as well as large ones. Here's & case in point: . ‘Without legs, a clean-faced and in- telligent young man daily takes a stand along F street, sits on his low- | wheeled cart and rigidly holds an empty cigar box toward the passing crowds. Never does he raise his eyes, never does he speak: always he sits, stares stolidly, too proud, perhaps, to do more. Few cions, however, rattle in his box as the crowd for which he is showing some measure of con- sideration hustles by. ‘Two buildings away is the contrast, the touch of showmanship. An aged Negro with a hand-printed sign hung about his neck beseeches alms. “Please help make my Christmas happy,” the sign says, and he rein- forces the plea with a steady spoken ritual. “Please, won't you please? I'm so old. Christmas is coming. ‘Plense, won't you, please?” Before him he holds a tin cup; steadily the coins drop: frequently he transfers | the contents to a heavy khaki over- coat. i We wondered if the sound of those ratiling cions traveled two buildings back. | o FLAME SWALLOWERS. If you think a burned child dreads the fire, take a peek into any brokerage office these days. Plenty of persons are reaching right out for big handfuls of flame. One of our friends who considers himself a wag offered a good ex- planation: “Things look lighter as the balance sheets get blacker.” We're on our way now to get some asbestos gloves. TOUCHDOWN! T A certain fox hunt down in| Virginia the hounds killed a fox last week within clear view of the riders. As the first riders to reach the scene of the kill are supposed to get the mask and brush as prizes, there was a mad dash toward the spot where the fox had been caught. One overzealous lad, who appar- ently was not familiar with such | things, galloped up, checked his horse | and jumped down to grab hold of the fox. The hunt staff iookea on aghast. “Well,” said the youth, proudly, “I ‘was the first man to touch the fox!" The staffl managed to control tem- pers, but one member could not resist observing, icily, “I'm glad to see you know a fox when you see one. I imagined from the way you fell on it you though it was a foot ball.” e SWAN SONGBIRD. A CANARY which has killed four gold fish is owned by a local taxi~ cab driver. The driver has a room in 8 boarding house in which he liberates the bird when he goes to work. His gold fish kept dying mysterious- 1y, pierced through the side by some sharp weapon. He did not suspect the canary until | the third fatality, and then concluded to watch through a crack in the bath room door. The canary flew to the edge of the little 'aquarium, perched there for a moment until‘a goldfish | came to the surface, and killed the unwary creature with a flashing thrust of his bill. | The aquarium is now covered with netting, but the bird still perches there, watching the occupants dart about and waiting for a break. * % % NO SALE. A Washington girl has turned her back on Hollywood. The reason was this passage jrom Pudovkin’s “Film Acting,” translated into English by one Ivor Montagu. “The hyper-discontinuity of act- ing work in relation to shooting desiderates a correspondingly espe- cially clear, definite and detailed absorption by the actor of the wholeness of his role.” X k% 3 HANDY HAWK. Now that the starling problem has come swarming home to roost, & big hawk is noticed by home-going | rowds on midtown Pennsylvania ave- nue each dusk, swooping after the small birds as they circle for the ledges of the Willard Hotel and ad- Joining buildings. The starlings are nimbler than the! | with him. ons of Interesting d Things. hawk, which dives through black clouds of the small birds, time after time, without making a catch. After 15 minutes of fruitless effort the other afternoon the hawk scooped up an unwary laggard from a ledge and made off for the open country to the south. * ¥ ¥ % MASCO‘I‘S which local taxicab drivers take with them when they work include at least one white rabbit, a black alley cat and, believe it or not, at least one alligator about 6 inches long. Still another hacker, a widower, takes his 4-year-old son in the cab “I always have a better day, some- | | how,” the driver explained, “when I| have my boy along!™ e SHOOTS WIFE AND SELF | | Secretary of Boston Leong Tong Quarrels Over Son. | BOSTON, December 9 (#)—A| quarrel over their young son led Ben- jamin Lee, 46, known as unofficial mayor of Boston's Chinese district, to shoot his white wife fatally and then kill himself, Police Lieut.
