The American Sccurity & Trust Co, Corcoran Thom, president, is celebrat- ing its forty-sixth anniversary today. ©Officials report that business during the last year has Jbeen particularly satisfactory, sev- eral new high levels being seached. In the 46-year period since the trust company was founded business has grown from 132 deposit accounts and $260.000 in deposits during first year to over 77,000 deposit ac- counts and more than $44.000,000 in deposits during 1935. Assets of the banking depart- ‘ment reached $52,000,000, while those assets controlled by the company ‘through its trust department amount to more than $120,000,000. Chartered originally under the laws of the State of Virginia on October 12, 2889, and later under the general in- corporation law enacted by Congress for trust companies within the Dis- trict of Columbia, the company was authorized to conduct a general bank- ing, trust, safe deposit and storage svarehouse business, to act as fiscal and transfer agent and registrar of securities. On December 9, 1889, the company opened its doors for busi- ness. Operates Four Branches. In addition to the main office at Fifteenth street and Pennsylvania avenue northwest the company main- tains four branch offices in principal Eections of the city. Three of the offices were acquired at the time of the merger with thé Home Savings Bank in 1919. The original capital stock of $1,250,- 000 was increased to $3,000,000 in 1903 and in 1919 was further increased to £3,400,000. The surplus account has been built up to equal that amount &nd now the combined capital, sur- plus and undivided profits is more than $7,500.000. Mr. Thom, president of the trust company, succeeded the late Charles | J. Bell, who in 1928 relinquished the | post after 35 years as active head of | the company. Mr. Bell's predecessor was Alexander T. Britton, who served ®s the first president of the company. Other officers are Howard Moran, wvice president: William L. Commerce Declares “Extra.” Directors of the Bank of Commerce & Savings, Seventh and E streets, have declared the regular semi-an- nwual dividend of $3 per share due at this time and a special dividend of %2 on the outstanding stock, both ble January 2, to stockholders of ecord December 20, it was announced today. Last July the board declared the regular semi-annual dividend of 83 a share for the first half year. This $3 payment and the $3 and $2 payments just voted mean that the bank is paying $8 a share in 1935, Officials report earnings have been highly satisfactory. Dollars and Sense Appears. Dollars and Sense, the publication ‘of Washington Chapter, American In- stitute of Banking, appeared in the financlal district today. The Decem- ber number, published by Editor A. E. Henze and his stafl, is one of the best seen in a long time. The booklet contains a message from Robert V. Fleming as president of the American Bankers’ Association, urging young men and women in the banks of the city to take as many of the institute courses as possible and equip themselves for the broadened opportunities which lie ahead in the banking field. Mergenthaler Stock Higher. Stock of the Mergenthaler Lino- type Co., which is so widely held in this city, gained a half point over Bunday on the Washington Stock Ex- change, selling today at 38. ‘The market opened with a 50-share sale, followed by a 10-share transfer and closing with a transaction in- volving 16 shares.
