INSTALLMENT XXIL HUCK'S spirits knew no bounds as he hurried off to the locker room. He dressed &s quickly as he could. He felt that after having watched the Malbern defense all afternoon he knew its weaknesses better than he would have had he been in the conflict, calling the plays. While he was dressing, Bertwell, extremely nervous over the outlook, turned to Fremont, the fourth-string quarterback, during a lull in the play, and propounded a hypothetical ques- tion. It was a habit of Bertwell to pop questions at his pilots when they least expected them, just to see if they were thinking foot ball and could react fast. “Fremont . . . It's near the end of the game. The score is nothing to nothing. We're on the opposing team’s | It's fourth down and 80-yard line. ‘What would you do?"” % Yards to go. “I'd just move over on the bench,| eoach.” Even Bertwell, wrought up as he was, couldn't help laughing at the hupnor of the answer. The players, who heard Fremont’s remark, thought it a great joke, and it was passed down the ling of substitutes along the bench. “That's a better move than the one Raleigh made when he went in the| remarked Tubby when he| game,” “I could do as badly heard the yarn. @&s that myself.” Chuck rushed up to bench and sat dewn beside Bertwell. seeing that he returned from the Jocker room in his uniform, set up a great howl. Suddenly, it seemed, they saw in him a possible champion who might lead Colburn on to a victory. The cheering gained in volume and here and there in the stands students, idoubting Raleigh's ability to pilot the‘ team, were openly shouting Arnold's hame. Bertwell was not carried away in the fervor, however. He sat there on the bench, grimly, and tense. He wasn't going to risk losing two quarterbacks | in one game if he could help it. Better to Reep Arnold for the Coke clash and the big game with Sanford. As the minutes wore on the situation be- came more serious. Raleigh was losing ground. His selection of plays was pathetic. The penalty he brought on the team by talking to a teammate be- fore he had called his first play had | shaken his faith in himself consider- | sbly. He was nervous, and his mind didn't seem to react quickly to the! changing circumstance and exigencies | of the game. With five minutes left to play, Bertwell, seeing the hopelessness of trying to score with Raleigh leading | the eleven, put his hand on Arnold’s ghoulder. “Arnold,” he said, with a show of determination, “I think your | judgment is sound. You've shown up well in our strategy sessions. Now | let’s see you go out there and come | through. You can do it. I know you | can.” “Thanks, coach.' And he pulled on his headguard and ran out on the fleld to replace Raleigh. The crowd | went wild. Any substitution would | have caused the same outburst, for thé Colburn students were avid for a | victory. Chuck was the lucky one. ‘His name rang resonantly around the cofifines of Bailey Ov: Deep in the back of his mind was Rhe conviction that the game could still be won. Malbern's backs were | pldying in a position that made them easy marks for a short, fast forward pass to the right or left of the wing- men. He decided to iead up to that Malbert still had the ball. wvent the Orange backs from making | another first down. Time was of the eessence now. Possession of the pig- skin was nine-tenths of the battle. So long as one team had the ball the | other team couldn't win. Malbern knew that and was bent on keepirg the ball. The Orange pilot decided to try to | make a first down on his own 42-yard line on fourth down with 4 yards to go. Crash! ball carrier ripped into the center of the Colburn line. Capt. Minton charged low and hit the ball carrier with his head. Up went the orange- iclad player, high in the air. He turned @ complete somersault and landed on | the nape of his neck. It looked like & first down. The head linesman ran out with the | 10-yard measuring chain. Carefully he’ set it down. There were still 3 inehes to go. The Colburn crowd rose enl sent a mighty cheer to the heavens. It was Colburn’s ball on the Orange 41-yard line. Chuck raced up to call the signals. In his head Wwas the conviction that, despite the fact that there were but a few minutes {eft to play, there was still time for a sequence of plays. He shot an off-tackle play roaring off Bloomgarten's back for a gain of 8 yards. On the next play Corbett ‘carried the ball off Bloomgarten again on an off-tackle play for 6 yards. With & yard to go on third down, Chuck sent Hoffmeister straight through tackle on a dive-tackle play. First down on 25-yard line. “How Much time to play, please?” asked Chuck of the official standing close by. “A minute and a half.” Chuck called a time out. ‘“Listen, " he said excitedly, “we got these birds licked now, if you just carry out your assignments. I know what I'm talking about. All I ask is to go through with your jobs right. We have time for a touchdown yet. There’s minute and a half left. I'm going to run a play over in front of the goal posts. They’ll think we're going to try a drop-kick. Now here's ‘where we fool them. Instead of drop- kicking, I'm going to lift a pass to Bloomgarten. No, we haven't any such play, but we're going to do it anyway, unless Minton objects.” “You're running the club, Arnold. n“ ©O. K. with me if you think it'll 0" ¥ “I know it will go. T've sucked their backs in for a pass. If they think a kick is coming they'll come in even closer, and some of them will try to block it. You hesitate a second, Bloomy, count two -before you bear out to the right. Then swing in right In front of the goal posts in the mid- dle of the end zone. That's where I'll pass it to you. About 5 yards in gront of the uprights. I'll take the blame if anything goes Wrong. “C'mon, let's go. Let’s go like hell We can take ’em.” The whistle blew. Zhe teams lined up. Determination was written boldly on the faces of the players. Chuck snapped out the sig- pals. Salinger carried the ball over €0 the center of the field and was downed heavily on Malbern’s 22-yard fine. The Colburn stands were a seething mass of wildly cheering hu- imans, crying out with booming em- “We want a touchdown!” Chuck called, “Kick farmtt!m, Ar- old back.” The team shifted like & A The students, | Col- | burn’s line was fighting hard to pre- | And Malbern’s best | Chuck meas- ured the distance. The backs moved up closer. The fullback went up into the Orange line 50 as to be able to tear in and stop the kick. “Block that kick! Block that kick!” yelled the Orange rooters fervently. Chuck called out the signals and crouched low as though to boot the ball when he got it from the center. Minton shot a beautiful pass into Chuck’s waiting hands. Chuck took a step forward, coolly, deliberately, as though in the act of kicking the ball. Just when it seemed he would be buried in an avalanche of Orange players bearing down on him with full speed, he sidestepped nimbly, turned and ran back, fixing the ball in his passing hand as he ran. In that brief and hectic moment he thought of Corbin and the good Al- truda III. He would pass the same | way. Back he raced with the Orange | players in hot pursuit. Suddenly he stopped, dug his cleats firmly in the ground, and shot the pass. It was a pretty spiral, traveling with just the | right arch and the exact amount of | lift. Bloomgarten sped toward the | uprights. He got there just as the | ball arrived. Gently and firmly he | let it settle in his hands. The score- board flashed 6 points. The stands of Colburn students were raving with | uncontrolled joy. Coach Bertwell was | sitting on the bench as though petri- ‘fled. He had never seen that play. He never gave it to the team. He didn't know whether to be glad or mad. Slowly he wsagged his head. “What nerve that kid Arnold has got,” | he finally said aloud. “Nerve hell, Coach,” said Tubby, who was bounding up and down the | sidelines in a frenzy of joy. “Brains |is what I call it. But I'd hate to be | in his boots if that play hadn’t worked. | You'd a tied the old tin can on him, I bet.” “Well, it worked,” Bartwell smiled back. “And I'm mighty glad it did. That's the test of a play. after all. Hoffmeister was standing back to try the placekick. Chuck knelt on one knee to hold the ball. His back ached him from having thrown that winning pass, but he was so thrilled w\\ith the victory, that he didn't mind | |it much. The whistle blew -just as | Hoffmeister'’s kick bounced off the goal posts and rolled in the end zone. | The scoreboard still read, Colburn, 6; | Malbern, 0. The Colburn students didn’t wait to | catch their breath. They poured out on the field and surrounded the team. | Fellows who never even bothered to | 'sa\ hello to Arnold before, now fought | | and pushed each other around in an | effort to shake his hand. Time and | | again he winced as some enthusiastic fellow slapped him warmly on the | back to congratulate him on the winning pass. For days following the game, Chuck’s name was on every tongue. | And when it spread around the cam- | pus that he had made up the play on \the spur of the moment, he was re- | garded in an even more heroic light. | All the old disdain he had caused as a cocky sophomore who refused to go out for the team vanished over night. Arnold was the idol of the campus. The greatest pilot Colburn ever had. He was a wonder. No one denied | that. | The game with Coke the following Saturday was the last step in prep- aration for the Sanford battle.. All season the team had been pointed for these two elevens. The rivalry and tradition behind the Sanford clash always made it Colburn’s main objec- tive, but Ccke was regarded as a team every bit as strong as Sanford. Ar- nold, by virtue of his generalship | against Malbern, had piloted the team in its practice sessions throughout the week, and it was a foregone conclu- sion that he would start the Coke fracas. ‘The game was to be played at Coke. More than half the student body planned to accompany the team to the distant bailiwick, and help bring back the spoils of victory. The band was te be sent at the students’ expense, and there was scarcely a man at Col- burn who didn't contribute willingly to the purse that was collected to pay | the expenses of some of the itinerant musicians. Repeated triumphs bred | generosity. Colburn hadn't known the thrill of successive victories in | many years. Chuck wrote Nancy, asking her to attend the game. She had replied that her mother objected to her going so far without a chaperon, but that she would try to make it anyway. Thursday afternoon just before the | team was given a big “send off” by the student body, Chuck called Nancy on the long-distance phone and begged her to make the game under any circumstances. He had al- ready made arrangements for her ticket. She was to sit with his room- mate Barkley, who would meet her at the railroad depot when she arrived. She promised to be there if she pos- sibly could get away. (To be continued.) ———— CHURCH BAZAAR TO OPEN First Methodist Protestant Be- gins 3-Day Festival Tomorrow. The actual charge was that the com- nany failed to keep a coirect record of thé time put in by Lillian Hennage, employed at a branch store in the 300 block of Pennsylvania avenue southeast. Both the employe and the inspector testified she went to work at 10:30 a.m. on November 2, while com- pany records purported to show she went to work at 11:30 am. Had she reported for work at the time given by the company she would have worked only seven hours. Judge John P. McMahon said that in this particular case, the actual time put in did not matter, since the record was in error.
