Details from the Reserve Bank of Richmond's monthly review, received here today, bring to light the fact that October and early November witnessed more improvement in business in the fifth Federal Reserve district, which includes Washington, than any other six weeks in several years. The array ©f upturns is most impressive. Reporting member banks in leading cities increased their loans slightly, chiefly in commercial loans, and added to investments in Government securi- ties. Demand deposits rose rfl:terinlly be- tween October 9 and November 13, but there was a slight drop in time deposits. Debits to individual, firm and cor- poration accounts made a higher per- centage increase over last year than in any month this year since Feb- Fuary. Employment showed improvement in nearly all lines of industry and trade, especially in construction fields. Coal production scored considerably more than a seasonal increase and was 12 per cent above the like period Jast year. Textile Demand Broadens. Demand for textile products broad- ened materially during October and early November and cotton mill con- sumption increased 11.7 per cent over October, 1934. j Spot cotton prices rose steadily, the review says, influenced by an increased demand for textile products, better export demand for raw cotton and decreased production prospects for the 1935 cotton crop. Tobacco markets sold large amounts of tobacco for prices considered satis- factory in view of a much larger yield than in 1934 Tobacco manufacturing was at near- record levels, production exceeding October, 1934, production in all lines. Construction work undertaken in the fifth district showed a decided increase. Building permits were up 31 per cent and contracts actually awarded, 136 per cent. Fall weather was ideal for maturing crops and for harvesting and 1935 yields were higher in nearly every case than was expected earlier in the season. Larger Profits Anticipated. Fifth district’s two leading money crops, cotton and tobacco, will prob- ably be more profitable than last year as higher yields are expected to offset Jower prices. R Cncta raisers expect materially in- creased receipts and fruit growers have had large crops of good quality for market, the Richmond Bank says. Retail trade was retarded in October by exceptionally mild and clear weather, but was ahead of the pre- yious year, while wholesale trade in five leading lines also made favorable isons. e tes improvement in batk= than in other lines, due to the ability of business to CATTy on activities without calling on the banks for much elp. 2 'I"’lme deposits in 41 reporting mem- ber banks and aggregate deposits in 11 mutual savings banks totaled $395,~ 163,714 at the end of October, & higher figure than the $394,295,958 at the end of September this year, or $383,- 061,051 at the end of October, 1934, the report states. Fischer Gives Success Rules. Speaking of how to get rich during 193: selling insurance, Chester O. Fischer, general agent of the Massa= chusetts Life Insurance Co. in st Youis, gave one of the best success talks the District ‘Underwriters’ As- sociation has heard in many months et the December meeting at the Wil- jard. He stressed four chief points, knowledge, faith, plans and action. The four, he said, will accomplish paything in 1936 or in any other year. Ynsurance leaders should be very happy over the business and economic progress made in this country during the past two years. Insurance men jmust know their business, have faith 3n the companies they work for and In the business outlook, make definite plans for securing new business, and ghen get into action. He declared that agents should have ghree hard and fast rules—get to their offices at a definite time in the morn- ing, always be on the street at a definite time in the forenoon and at @ certain time in the afternoon. Most underwriters know how to sell in- gurance, their success being largely a question of will power, he said. " The speaker was introduced by John ¥. Cremen, at the request of President J. E. McCombs. W. G. Batchelder, chairman of the Membership Commit- tee, reported 52 new members recently enrol'ed. Trust Fund Official Here. NEW YORK, December 4.—Heavy buying among rails lifted the stock market 1 to 3 points during late deal- ings today. Trading became active at the be- ginning of the final hour after a rest~ ing spell, during which early gains of major fractions to more than a point were shaded by profit taking. Other shares in steady de- mand included New York Central, Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, Johns-Manville, Kennecott, Bethle- hem Steel and Seaboard Oil. The | late tone was strong.
