By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 3.—Finan- cial difficulties of the St. Louis-South- western Railway, heightened by the necessity of meeting $490,000 in in- terest obligations due January 1, were faced today at a directors meeting in New York. A decision by officials ‘on the course 10 pursue was expected in some quar- ters to be announced after the ses- sion. Street that funds for the payment were not in sight at the moment were followed by an informal session of the Cotton Belt directors in the New York office adjoining the office of Southern Pacific, which owns more than 87 per cent of the outstanding common and preferred stock of the cotton belt. Issues Are Listed. The issues upon which interest is due January 1 are first terminal and unifying mortgage 5 per cent bonds, due January 1, 1952, of which $8,063,- 000 are outstanding in the hands of the public; General and Refunding mortgage gold 5 per cent bonds, series “A,” due July 1, 1990, outstanding in hands of public $9,327,500 and second mortgage income 4 per cent bond cer- tificates due November 1, 1989, out- standing in hands of public, $3,042,- 500. In addition, the carrier owes the Re- construction Finance Corp. a total of $17,882,250, which was due December 1, but it is believed the obligation was extended by the R. F. C. to March 1. The amount is guaranteed by the Southern Pacific. Two Courses Considered. Observers reported there were two courses open to the Cotton Belt. The R. F. C. could make further extensions to meet the interest payments, if guaranteed by the Souther: Pacific, or it might receive funds directly from the Southern Pacific. Without financial aid from outside sources, the road could invoke an in- denture in its refunding mortgage 5s providing for a 60-day period of grace ! after default of interest during which | it could devise plans for making good ! the default. In the other two issues, the period of grace is 90 days. Daniel Upthegrove, president of the Cotton Belt, declined to comment on the situation pending the meeting of directors, DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED NEW YORK.
