By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 3.—Domes- tic corporation bonds showed firming tendencies during late trading today under leadership of low-priced rails, many of which advanced major frac- | tions to more than 2 points. United States Governments partici- pated in the upturn, gaining 3-32ds to 12-32ds under a fairly heavy de- mand. Foreign loans were generally steady. Among corporate issues on the up- side were Baltimore & Ohio 4!:s at 5934, New York Central 5s at 7812, Nickel Plate 4!>s at 67, Southern Railway 4s at 52% and Erie 5s at 75. Most of the active St. Lbuis South- western issues were small fractions to more than 3 points higher. Chicago Grain. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 3.—Late ral- lies of wheat prices today at times more than overcame earlier losses. Messages from Winnipeg that report- ed some wheat buying attributed to European continental account provided more or less of a stimulus. General speculative buying interest in Chicago, | however, lacked volume, although pri- ‘vate reports showed a tendency to re- duce estimates of the probable Argen- tine exportable surplus. Wheat closed unsettlcd at the same as yesterday’s fimsh to 3s higher; May, 965a%; corn, 3« off to 's up; May, 5814a%; oats, unchanged to % higher, and provisions showing 2 cents to 10 cents advance. Advancing for the fourth consecu- tive week, the weekly wholesale com- modity price index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association rose to 80.1 per cent of the 1926-1928 aver- age in the week ended November 30, the highest point reached this year and also in the recovery period. The index was 80 in the preceding week, 9.3 a month ago and 75.8 a year ago. The rise in the index in the latest week was due primarily to an upward movement in the grains, feeds and live stock group, and more particu- larly to higher prices for live stock. Hog prices during the week reached the highest level attained in any No- vember in the past eight years. Whole- sale food prices were generally lower, the principal exception being a con- | tinued rise in the price of pork. ‘The textiles price index reacted during the week, the result of lower quotations for cotton, burlap and silk following a continued upward trend which had lasted for three months. Lower prices for lard and butter were primarily responsible for a sub- stantial decline in the fats and oils index. The building materials and fuel in- dexes registered slight increases, re- flecting - higher prices for oak floor- ing and coke. The price of cotton- seed meal declined during the week. causing a slight drop in the fertilizer materials index. Eighteen price series included in the index advanced during the week and 23 declined; in the preceding week there were 32 advances and 16 de- | clines; in the second preceding week there were 25 advances and 23 declines. Dun's Index Down. NEW, YORK, December 3 (P.— Dun'’s index number of wholesale com= modity prices dropped to $177,732 on December from $178,614 on November On December 1, last year, the index stood at $170,199. Chairman Looks for Further Gains. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 3.—J. Stew- art Baker, chairman of the board of the Bank of Manhattan Co. said today, in his annual report to stock- holders, that a general improvement in business conditions had taken place and he looked for further expansion. “The return to really prosperous times must wait on the revival of the demand for new construction, new machinery and new equipment,” he said. “This will nct come until business men feel that the laws under which they operate are not subject to vio- lent changes and until the corporate securities market, upon which they must depend for the money to pay for plant expansion, is available to them without expensive and burden- some restrictions, * * * “Always, common sense, individual initiative and inherent energy have asserted themselves and the people of the United States have moved for- ward with renewed vigor to create, to manufacture and to distribute. There is no doubt that they will do so again.” Baker estimated the bank earned $3,733,000 in 1935, which would com- pare with $4,950,000 earned last year. Baker sald the Manhattan had | brought its foreign investments, much | of which is of German origin, down ber 30, against $10,347,000, as of Jan- uary 1.
