MISS THOMAS DIES; NOTED EDUCATOR President Emeritus of Bryn; Mawr Credited With Elevating Medicine. By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, December 2.— Miss M. Carey Thomas, president emeritus of Bryn Mawr College and one of the best-known woman educa- tors in the country, died today. She | was 79. Miss Thomas was associated with (edar Hill ahingtimost el (emetery Where Perpetual Care is | More Than a Promise| 1< Trinkets o Bryn Mawr since its founding in 1885 and was its second president. She retired from active college work in 1922 and that year was elected presi- dent emeritus. After waging successfully a deter- mined fight abroad for the academic degrees which were denied her only because of her sex, Miss Thomas de- voted most of her life to the higher education of women. She was also a leader in the women's suffragist | movement years ago. Aided Johns Hopkins. An outstanding achievement was her part in raising an endowment fund of $500,000 in connection with the establishment of the Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1893. She made it a condition of her work that women should be admitted to the school on the same terms as men. Miss Thomas spoke at the celebra- tion of the fftieth anniversary of Bryn Mawr’s founding a month ago today and said it was “probably my last speech.” She was showered with tributes for her contributions toward scholarship. Dr. Florence Rena Sabin, who re- ceived the M. Carey Thomas award for outstanding achievement among American women at the anniversary celebration, credited Miss Thomas not only with opening doors of medical schools to women, but also with having been responsible for making medical Georgian type sof! NG _STAR, WASHINGTON, education in this country & distinctly graduate study. Changed Medical History. She said Miss Thomas changed the whole course of medical education by making the requirement for entrance to the Baltimore university a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, or the equivalent. To this Dr. Sabin traced the high level of medical train- ing in the United States. Miss Thomas sald that among con- gratulatory messages she received on the anniversary, this one she cher- ished most: “I have forgotten everything I learned at Bryn Mawr, but I still see you standing in chapel and telling us to believe in women." DANGER SIGNAL FAILS Steamer Grounded When Whistle Freezes in Fog. KETCHIKAN, Alaska, December 2 () —A frozen whistle caused the grounding of the steamer Northwest- ern, with 65 passengers aboard, in the treacherous Seymour Narrows yester- day. The undamaged ship was re- floated four hours later. During foggy weather, such as pre- vailed yesterday, the whistle is blown and the distance from shore com- puted by the number of seconds it takes for the echo to reach the ship. ereated by Karpen in the, quality way, damask coverings, $125. ‘What are you going to give this Christ- mas? Hughes, First Ju- rist of Her Sex in Texas, Likes Job. By the Associated Press. DALLAS, Tex, December 2.—Bob- bed-haired Judge Sarah T. Hughes, Texas' first and only woman jurist, likes the job so well she plans to be a candidate to succeed herself next year. Citing disposition of 118 jury trials and 509 non-jury cases in her first six months on the fourteenth district court bench, she said a woman judge can handle litigation as efficiently as any man. “In this business of being a judge,” she said, “I use common sense. Good law is no more subtle than that.” She prefers the bench to the prac- tice of 3aw, but politics is nearer her heart than either. “I love the color. the activity and the thrust and defense of politics,” she went on. “I realize, of course, that poiitics offers a precarious career, but the excitement of campaigning or battle in legislative chambers fascinates | me. ° “I don’t care about money—that is, in any considerable amount. I know that it will sound foolish to many per- scns, but I am sincere. I do enjoy public honors and I have an ambition to do something for the State.” ‘The governship? She hadn't thought of it. 8he took an early interest in politics but @id not become active until she | came to Dallas and began practicing law with her husband, George E. Hughes, to whom she married while both were seniors at George Washing- ton University Law School in 1922, Confirmation Fought. Her appointment to the bench to fill an unexpired term last February 13 brought a fight over confirmation, her home Senator arguing she “should be home washing dishes.” Judge Hughes said her career hadn't prevented her washing dishes. “It depends on the woman” she Chamber: Undertakers in the Werld 1400 Chapin St. N.W.
