Nature’s Common Milkweed BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. He who keeps through all his days Open_eves of wonder s the lord of me(y -:;Hder And the earth 3gHSred W. Gibson. ILKWEED children travel by air in silken parachutes, or M are they fluffy petticoats? We hardly realize what an amazing number of nature’s children have such exquisite traveling togs. As for packing, plant mothers can give us many lessons on how to fill every cranny. Milkweed mothers are progressive. They have perfected a “noxious milk” carefully avoided by cattle. Any bruised part of the plant gushes forth & stream of this sticky secretion. The #tem is rough, tough and hairy. The ants, famous pilferers, dare not try to| scale the ladder where pollen and nectar are flowing. Ants, as you know, are clad in shining armor, and not a bit of dust do they permit to remnin‘ on their antenna or legs. Besides, they have a sort of demijohn stomach to hold the nectar, and when they visit | a plant they fill up, then trek it for home, and the store house or nursery. Other plants are not as abreast of the times as the milkweeds. When the vast army of guests, | cruising overhead, sees the whole pale | advertisement of the milkweed, they know at once that her two important products are ready for distribution, but payment for service is exacted. | True the merchant has a most unusual | banquet hall and her guests have to | hang upside down to take their re- ||l freshment. Some of them get their feet caught in the “doors” of the nectary, and even lose their lives. This, ||| you will find, does not happen often, || but you should inspect the flower to see the casualty. Look into the flower. There are five | cornucopias, horns of plenty, we are told, and filled to the brim with a| delectable drink. Then peer closely, 80 you can see the long pocket which 1s between every other horn, You will | Children (Asclepia Syriaca). it. Plop! Behold the handsome pol- len saddlebags which were attached to the black button! It is these sticky saddlebags that sometimes get about the slender ankles of the guest and hold her prisoner. Later look at the frosty, green col- ored, feit-like pod. Examine the seams and later you can pull the lovely, velvet-like seed casket apart, and find it will have a perfectly smooth edge. Have you ever removed the seed chil- dren and placed beetlec inside, in- stead? My, what a lot of fuss they make in their white, velvet-lined prison. Best of all, find a milkweed pod ready to open, or just opened, and see how marvelously the silk threads are wound, about the baby, and how they float gently on the breeze as they are wafted away.
