< this family there are several on which ~found my watch, but it ain't no good * The skeletons have been turned over Bedtime Stories Peter Is Hurt and Frightened. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. ‘ bit of carelessness and. lo! our vers life's At stake. You know. —Old Mother Nature. ETER RABBIT was in trouble. There was no question about that. It was very real trouble. He had stepped on a loose stone on the top of the Old Stonewall on the edge of the Old Orchard. He had been climbing over that stonewall. That loose stone had slipped, and Peter's right hind foot had slipped 'with it down between the stones, and that loose stone had fallen down on Peter's foot, holding him fast. My, how it hurt! That was all he thought about at first, the hurt. Peter struggled and pulled, but he was held fast. It was an accident, of course, but it was an accident that S H[An was the result of carelessness. Peter was careless in stepping on that loose stone. He considered that he was the victim of bad luck, but the bad luck, as is so often the case, was not luck at all, only the result of carelessness. At first Peter had been hurt, but not frightened especially. Then as he struggled and could not get that foot free, he became frightened, and the more he struggled the more frightened he became, until in his fright he quite forgot his pain. “Oh, dear! Oh, dear! What shall T do?” panted Peter. “This is just like being caught in a trap. My leg is held fast and I can't move it. What shall I do? What shall I do?” ‘There was nothing Peter could do. The more he pulled the more he strug- that foot swell, and, of course, the more swollen it was the tighter it was held. Peter was in worse trouble than he had been in for a long, long time. He protably would have said that he was in worse trouble than he ever had been in. You see, it had come pver him what it all meant. Supposing Reddy Fox or Mrs. Reddy should happen to come over there to the Old Stonewall. Peter shuddered at the thought. the Weasel should happen along. Peter shuddered more than ever when he thought of Shadow the Weasel. Supposing & member of the Hawk family should fly overhead and, look- ing down, see Peter. He fairly shivered. Supposing Flip the Terrier should hap- pen to take it into his head to explore along the Old Stonewall, as he so often does. Despair gripped Peter's heart. Supposing Hooty the Owl, flying that way in the dusk, should see him with those wonderful eyes of his. Cold chills chased each other all over Peter. It was bad enough to be hurt, but it was worse to have this dreadful fear hanging over him. The hurt meant simply pain and aches, at the worst, while being held a prisoner so might very easily mean the loss of his life. Do you wonder that Peter felt as he did? Every time he thought of one of those enemies he tried to pull that foot free. Gradually it grew numb. Gradually Peter stopped struggling. You see, he was realizing more and more the uselessngss of it. It was Striped Chipmunk who first discovered Peter’s difficulties. Striped Chipmunk came scampering along the wall on his way to collect some seeds. When he first caught sight of Petar THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, Who Are You? The Romance of Your Name. The Ziegler family was first rep- resented in America by Francis Ot- tomar Ziegler, a native of Alsace-Lor= raine, who in 1777 came over'as aide- de-camp to Baron von Steuben, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. The detachments of Von Steuben’s troops landed at Portsmouth, N. H, and marched to York, Pa., where they were mustered into the Continental Army. Lieut. Ziegler participated in many battles during the war, and at its close settled in Lancaster County. Pa, where he engaged in the trade of silversmith. He later married Frances Hook and moved to Balti- more, Md. The Ziegler family is today well rep resented, particularly in Pennsylvania, Maryland and the Eastern States. Many of the family have risen to prominence in the various professions. he thought Peter was just sitting on the wall. “Hello, Peter Rabbit!” he exclaimed. “What are you doing over here? Why aren’t you at home in the dear Old Briar-patch?” Peter said nothing, but he looked at Striped Chipmunk and in his usually soft eyes was such a look of pain and distress that Striped Chipmunk ab- ruptly sat up’ and stared very hard at Peter. “What is the matter with you, | Peter Rabbit?” he demanded. “I'm caught,” said Peter in a weak veice. “Caught!” exclaimed Striped Chip- | munk. “How can you be caught? ‘There are no traps here. If there were, I would know about them.” Then Peter told him what had hap- gled, the worse off he was. It made Nature's pened. (Copyright 1935.) Children Sailor’s Choice (Lagodon Rhomboides). Many an angler and camper has been de- lighted to cast bait for them, as they make deliclous panfish. What they lack in size they make up in numbers, for 6 inches in length seems their ‘highest mark. It is olive-hued, with silvery blue sides and traces of six vertical bars and lovely gilt stripes. ‘The fins are pale blue, with golden bands and gilt borders. Human beings also live in a world of obvious, concrete things. At the same time they live in a world of abstract things. So far as we know, or ever can know, animals know nothing about such abstractions as loyalty, honesty and its opposite, truth and its opposite, electrons, the fourth dimension, the manifold mysteries of life and death. It is this additional world of abstractions that set the stage for the mental differences be- tween animals and men. You may get the feeling of this mental difference very easily.
