NEW YORK, r 18.—Indica- tions are that a llnble number of automobile buyers, many of whom were forced into the lowest price range in recent depression years, will hence- forth be inclined to pay more in re- turn for somewhat larger, more lux- urious products than can be offered in the $500 or $600 retail bracket, ob- serves the Standard Statistics Co. of New York in a current survey of the industry. ‘This year is the first since 1931 in which the proportion of automobile sales accounted for by Ford, Chevrolet and Plymouth, the lowest price class, decreased. ‘The shift of consumer preference is slightly up the scale to the group in which Dodge (Chrysler Corp.) and Pontiac and Oldsmobile (General Mo- tors) are the fastest sellers. NEW YORK, October 18.—The im- provement in the production and distribution of merchandise during September has been extended thus far in October, with few exceptions, the weekly review of Dun & Brad- street, Inc, sald today. The rate of improvement from week to week has been moderate, it stated. “The momentum gained during the special Columbus .day promotional events led to a vigorous expansion of consumer buying throughout the week,” the survey said. “Even though the weather was too balmy in some districts to permit the ready absorption of Fall apparel, a gain was reported by nearly every city. The rise in retail sales from the preceding weeks ranged up to 15 to 20 per cent, while the estimated average for the country as a whole was higher by 8 to 15 per cent than for the corresponding 1934 week. “While retailers’ inventories, which had been scant all Summer, were bolstered substantially during Sep- tember, the widening consumer de- mand has created an actual need for further accumulations of mer- chandise. “The heavy inroads on stocks was evident in the abrupt rise in buying in the leading wholesale markets dur- ing the week and the uniformity of | the requests for immediate shipment. “A rising price level, which prompt- { ed fresh commitments covering more distant needs, featured buying in most of the wholesale divisions, but mafl orders generally were larger than a week earlier and covered a wider range of items. “Production of electrical equipment | averaged 10 per cent higher than a | year ago, and sanitary and Neating | | equipment about 20 per cent,” the | review stated. This figure—$1,538,000,000 greater than last vear—is about $2,910,000,000 in excess of legal requirements, the statement said. The increase was brought abcut by imports of $121,000,000 in gold during the week which brought total stocks to $9,584,000,000, & new high level. Contributing also wa: a transfer of | : Treasury cash amounting to $54,000,- 000 which was moved from the reserve banks to other depositories.
