A new handy kitchen utility—easy, | own funds to purchase the tails from | fore, along certain Alaskan streams, a {DUKE OF BUCCLEUCH ILL | been ailing since an operation about Meet the ‘Fish Tail Queen’ She’s Mrs. M. L. Williams and Tflat’s Her Alaskan Title. BY RANDOLPH ROBERTS. UICK, Dr. Watson, the smell- ing salts! There's a woman up in Alaska who spends a lot of her time buying fish tails, of all things. And not only that but the finny tips are accepted up in the “north countree” as legal tender! In case you do not choose to ac- cept this weird yarn as fact, then youw'll have to argue it out with Charles E. Jackson, deputy commissioner of the Fisheries Bureau, but better known as Uncle Dan Roper's “No 1" jokesmith. Cornered today in hjs sanctum on the first floor of the Commerce Build- ing, Jackson, who's armed with al- most as many queer facts as the lads who make a living collecting them, said: “During a recent Alaskan trip I visited a grand fishing region on the Egegik River in the Bristol Bay sec- tion, just north of the Alaska Penin- sula. A friend said: ‘How would you like to meet the Fish Tail Queen?’ “‘0. K. said I. But I thought it was a gag. However, pretty soon I was introduced to Mrs. Morgan L. ‘Williams, one of the prettiest young women I've ever seen (yes, her hus- band was on hand). “‘How did ycu get your peculiar nickname?’ I asked. “‘I'm supposed to be the only woman in the world who buys fish tails. Also, I'm the only woman agent employed by the Bureau of Fisherfes in Alaska. My husband teaches the native children and just for fun, and a small salary, I collect Dolly Vardon fish tails. The bureau receives contri- | butions from the salmon canneries in | Alaska and supplements these with its Alaskan natives. *“The price range is from 25 to 8 cents apiece in cash. The Dolly Varden | trout is an arch-enemy to the red sal- mon, which is even greater in abun- dance than the famed king salmon and is next to the highest grade Alaskan fish. *‘This particular trout is an enor- mour consumer of salmon eggs. There- bounty has been paid for Dolly Vardons for some years. In certain places the tails are good for legal tender. At trad- ing posts the natives often exchange them for supplies.’ " And that’s the story of the fish-tail queen, Duke of Gloucester’s Fiancee Flies to Bedside of Father. LONDON, October 18 (#).—Lady Alice Montague Douglas-Scott, fiancee of the Duke of Gloucester, left Hendon Airdrome today in a private plane belonging to the Prince of Wales to | hasten to the bedside of her father, | the Duke of Buccleuch, seriously ill at Selkirk, Scotland. The Duke of Buccleuch, who has year ago, recently took a turn for MRS. MORGAN L. WILLIAMS, Egegik, Alaska, whose queer occu= pation has won her the title “the fish tail queen.” the worse. A bulletin issued today at Selkirk said he was weaker and his condition wds “very grave.” Insurance Exclusively For 25 Years M.
