BUSY 133 SEASON Production Expected to Pass 4,000,000 Easily in Coming Year. Special Dispatch to The Star. DETROIT, August 22.—The year 1936 is beginning to loom larger in | the plans of the motor car industry as the cleaning up of activity on cur- Y% | rent types nears completion, The industry traditionally plans far ahead in every significant move it makes. Under the impetus of an improvement in retail distribution that has grown consistently since 1932, the production and sales executives of the industry apparently are determined that next year's output is to be of such volume as definitely to put motor car manufacturing and merchandising back on a “normal” level. Few of the manufacturers or dis- tribution authorities will venture an estimate of what volume of cars and put and consumption, but several years ago—before 1929 etched a big hump in the production graph—sev- eral leading makers of motor cars as- serted that a “normal”. output meant & volume in excess of 4,000,000 units in one year, On the basis of present prospects that figure easily should be passed during 1936. ‘The $100,000,00p" the motor car in- dustry is spending for the expansion | of production facilities was designed | to: provide for an upward-moving | manufacturing demand for several | years to come. Yet the celerity with which the program as gotten under way shows the manufacturers expect to profit heavily from it next year. Already the program has resulted in the reopening of numerous assembly | plants by various producers. General Motors has extended production facili- ! tles for several of its divisions and Ford has a major part of the steel manufacturing expansion completed. | Contracts also have been let by sev- eral other producers for new equip- ment. RETAIL BUYING HELD IOWA RECOVERY SIGN By the Associated Press. | DES MOINES, Iowa, August 22.—A wave of buying, sharply outlined in in- creased retail sales, was hailed by Iowa | business men as revealing the State had stepped out on the “road to re- covery.” Based on the State sales tax returns, retail transactions increased $33,000, 000 in the second quarter of 1835 over the same period last year. ‘The figures were announced by Louls E.
