A—12 D. C. NAVY RESERVE RANKS 26TH AGAIN Eleventh Battalion at St. Paul Gets First Place for Year. The 1st Battalion of local Naval Re- servists attached to the Washington Navy Yard, had the same standing for 1935 as for 1934—twenty-sixth on the list—the Navy Department re- wvealed yesterday. The Acting Secretary of the Navy, * Col. Henry L. Roosevelt, made public the annual report of the presidgnt of the Naval Reserve Inspection Board, Rufus W. Mathewson, U. 8. N. This was approved by Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews, chief of the Bu- reau of Navigation. Included in & list of recommenda- tions in the report was a statement showing the relative efficiency of the Naval Reserve battalions, revealing that the 11th Battalion at St. Paul, Minn., in the 9th Naval District, stood first in 1935. Second place was held by the Connecticut outfit, 5th Bat- talion, 3d Naval District. Washington'’s étanding of twenty- sixth was shared with the 6th Bat-| B talion of the 9th Naval District, Chi- | cago, Tll, which also attained a final merit for 1935 of 80.6. The 1st BBC- talion at Maryland, which is in '.he 6th Naval District, stood twenty-eighth on the list, as did the 5th Battalion of Chicago, both attaining a mark of 80.4 for the year. Altogether in this category, there were 36 outfits, that at Columbus, Ohio, bringing up the rear guard. The 1st Division at the Washington Navy Yard attained a standing of 121, | with a final merit mark of 79.5. The 2d Division here stood eighty-eight! with a final merit status of 8L while the 3d Division stood at 107, with a final merit of 80.6, which was also the figure for the whole battalion. | Praise for Local Officer. The board urged that, among other officers performing outstanding duty, Lieut. (Junior Grade) L. V. Berkner, United States Naval Reserve, com- manding VN-6R Division at Anacostia, D. C., the aviation division having the second highest merit, be awarded 2 | letter of commendation from the chief | of the Bureau of Navigation. 1n making his report to the Secre- tary of the Navy, Admiral Andrews pointed out that the amount of funds available in the 1936 Naval Reserve appropriation for training duty is lim- jted to the annual training periods for the various organizations of the Fleet Naval Reserve and an insignifi- cant number of officers and men of the Volunteer Reserve. Concerning the standing of the local divisions, the report declared that the 1st Division here stood No. 121, whereas in 1934 it was 72; the Zd‘ Division stood 88, while the 3d Divi- sion stood 107, compared Wwith 100 in 1934 —_— ARMY ORDERS.
