DOUBLE SLAYING Retired Contractor and Red-Headed Boy Alleged | Victims in California. By the Associated Press. AUBURN, Calif, August 22— Bheriff Elmer Gum announced early | today that Earl Cramer, 21, itinerant | prospector, voluntarily confessed the | double slaying of James C. Kennett, | sr.. retired Chicago contractor, and | an unidentified red-headed youth in | 8 deserted mining camp 40 miles | northeast of here. { The sheriff said Cramer told him | that he shot Kennett with a .22- | cailber rifie in a quarrel over food | about the latter part of June and | secreted his body in an abandoned | mine shaft. The death of the youth, identified | only as a “young tramp,” occurred | several days later. | Sheriff Is Summoned. Farly last night, after the sheriff | had returned here from the scene of the camp in a fruitless search for | Kennett, who had gone into the mountains in search of his health, the sheriff found a message from Cramer. He said he went to the youth's cell and asked him what he wanted, Cramer replying that he had something to tell him. “The story,” the sheriff said, “as nearly as I can make out, indicates| that Kennett was killed around June 29. Cramer said he didn't know what day it happened, but we have fixed the approximate time from the fact that two checks addressed to Kennett were cashed by Cramer about July 1 in| Auburn and a few days before that| ~ Cramer had written a letter to the | Emigrant Gap postmaster and in- | structed him to forward the mail of | Kennett here. Quarrel Over Food. “Cramer told me that he and Ken- hett had quarreled over the division | of some food which the two men pre- | sumarly had brought into the camp when both were living. that knowledge of the shooting of | Kennett by the youth had anything to do with the subsequent killing of the second man. “He said that the boy stole his rifle and that when he attempted to re- cover it, the boy tried to shoot him. He said he stabbed the boy with a knife and later shot him, throwing the body in another mine shaft.” j TAXICAB WELFARE UNIT FORMED HERE Drivers Hope to Make Associa- tion Permanent for Advance- ment of Interests. Formation of the Taxicab Welfare Association this week marked new efforts of cab drivers of the city to| organize.
