Hirosi Saito, Ambassador from Japan, was the guest of honor at a ceremony for presentation of jour- nalism awards at Roosevelt High Bchool yesterday. It was an interview with the Jap- anese diplomat that won Jane Eichlin, national contest for high school editors conducted by the. Schofastic Magazine. Other students to whom awards were made were Stanley Kamerow, Jean Gorbach, Erva Barger, Pat Davis, Maureen Stuart, Geraldine Lust, Mil- dred Friedman, Murjel Donovan, Jeanne Gaines, Arthur Branscombe, Lorraine Shives, Gertrude Crane, Nancy Hall, Eleanor Smith and Janet Eldridge. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY BODY AUTHORIZED Roosevelt Signs Resolution Pro- viding for Qommillion to Study Project. President Roosevelt has signed the joint resolution providing for establishment of a commission for construction of a Lincoln Memorial- Gettysburg Boulevard to connect the Lincoln Memorial with the Gettys- burg: battlefield. The commission is to be composed of 13 members, with the President chairman ex-officio. The other mem- bers ‘will bBe the Vice President, Speaker of the House, president of .the District Board of ners, the District Enginees Commissioner, the chief of the Bureau of Public Roads, the director of the National Park Service, one Senator and one mem- ber of the House from Pennsylvania and Maryland and two civilians to be appointed by the President. The sum of $10,000 has been au- thorized to defray the expenses of tne commission. This body will be directed to prepare and submit plans for this boulevard, und after they have been accepted, the actual con- struction work will be carried on under the jurisdiction of the high« way departments of this city, Mary- land and Pennsylvania. GARNETT IS PRAISED BY D. C. GRAND JURY Action in Freeing Mrs. Rogers After Accident Elicits Com- mendation of Foreman. Admiration from the District grand Jury was expressed yesterday in a let- ter by the foreman, John R. Keener, to District Attorney Leslie C. Garnett for his action in recently releasing Mrs. Mattie Estelle Rogers in the cus- tody of her attorney after she had been ordered held for grand jury ac- tion by & coraner’s jury in connection with the death on May 1 of Mrs. Sarah Bowerman. Mrs. Bowerman was struck April 30 by Mrs. Rogers' automobile at Ontario and Columbis rosds. Mrs. Rogers drowned herself in the bathtub of her home, May 13, several hours after the coroner’s jury had taken action. The letter to Mr. Garnett, from Mr. Keener reads: “It is my pleasure to convey to ycu, at the direction of all the members of | the grand jury, and on their behalf and my own, our sincere admiration of your just, intelligent and humane act in releasing in' the custody of her attorney Mrs. Mattie Estelle Rogers on the same day on which the coroner’s jury held her for the action of the grand jury on the charge of homicide, growing out of of Mrs, Bmurmz.n Y Mrs, Rogers was exonerated by the grand jury when the case was pre- sented before it on “its merits” after her death, at the request of her hus- band, Maj.
