BY EDWARD C. STONE. J. E. McCombs, general agent of the Berkshire Life Insurance Co., was elected president of the District of Columbia Life Underwriters' Assocla- tion at the an- nual election held following an- nouncement that Washington agents wrote a total of $5,155.000 in new business during Life In- surance week. The meeting was held at the Wil- lard Hotel yester- day. The new president has been active in the association for "yE years. Laurence H. Riggles, Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co. was elected first wvice president; Earle W. Sapp, general agent New England Mutual, second vice president; Charles W. O'Connell, general agent Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Co., treasurer, and Joseph A. Barbeau, agent Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co., secretary. F. George Clendaniel, retiring presi- dent, will serve on the board of direc- tors during the coming vear, together with P. L. Rogers, Dwight W. Scott and George T. Black, who have been on the bgard, and three new directors elected yeésterday, Earl W. Sapp, Ver- non W. Holleman, general agent Home Life of New York, and Thomas R. Crowley, one of the general agents of the Penn Mutual. Insurance Goal Far Exceeded. The total of $5,155,000 written here 4n the six-dey drive involved 1,701 ap- plications. The goal had been 1,000. It was announced that the team cap- tained by Freedman N. Stricklan cap- tured first honors by securing 106 ap- plications, this team including: S. H. Gettis, Leo D. Wells, J. W. White, W. C. White. C. O. Whitmors, w. L. Whitson, Robert Wick. E. O. Wiel- and, Abraham Wiener, Willie T. Wil- liams. William A. Willis, Bernard L. Wilner. Morton H. Wilner, C. M. Wil- son. Graham E. Wilson, Maj. Guy Withers, Alexander Wolf, jr.; Miss E. R. Wolfe, E. Wolverton, Claude E. Wood. H. C. Young, Nathan Ben ‘Watkin and D. W. Zook. On the 25 teams, No. 19, Capt. Lynch, won second place with 72 applications, and No. 21, Capt Nichols, won third honors with 70 applica- tions. Individual prize winners were also announced at the victory lunch- eon, first prize being carried off by Maj. Guy Withers, Equitable Life As- surance, who obtained 33 applications during the week: Sidney Simon, New <ork Life, second with 29 applica- tions, and Ellis Silvertone, Metropol- itan, who came third with 24 appli- cations. Special prizes were awarded these three men, amid great applause. In addition to these topnotchers, the following wrote 12 or more new applications during the week: L. D. Carroll, Mutual Life of New York; S. H. Gettis, Fidelity Mutual; Blanche Weaver, Jefforson Standard: Claude A. Cook, Equitable Life Assurance; C. Moore, Prudential; George E. Har: ris, Mutual Beneficial of New Jersey; R. A. DuFour, Massachusetts Mutual; J. H. Horrigan, Penn Mutual; Roy E. Hughes, Equitable Life Assurance; M. H. Naiman. Metropolitan, and Frank McCombs. D. Roach, Mutual Beneficial of New | Jersey. A list as long as the moral law was also reported at the luncheon of those who had written six or more applications during the week. Pres- fdent Clendanial presided, four hun- dred of the city’s leading agents being present. Winthrop Batchelder was general chairman, who expressed grat- Itude for the remarkable co-operation displayed in the big campaign. Lanston Asks Registration. ‘The Lanston Monotype Machine Co. has filed an application with the Becurities Exchange Commission ask- ing for permanent registration, it was announced at the Washington Stock Exclsnge today. The application covers the company’s common stock. which is listed on the exchange here and is an active issue. The stock went to 60 following the recent annual report. About 10 of the leading corporations having securities on the local exchange have filed their applications with the Securities Commission. The appli- cations are expected to be in by June 1, as the permanent registration law goes into effect on July 1. Corpora- tions having securities on the ex- changes all over the country are now rushing their applications to Wash- ington. The commission has hinted that the date for filing may be ex- tended, but the date for the perma- nent registration law going into effect cannot be changed. Many corporations have complained over the expense involved in filing these applications with the commis- sion. The amount of information de- manded requires a great deal of re- search. The information gives the commission and the investor an ex- haustive summary of every company’s condition, but the cost has caused a tremendous amount of grumbling from coast to coast, regardless of the improved standing which the cor- porations receive from registering. Heard in Financial District. ‘Barber & Ross 6'2 per cent bonds received all the trading attention on the Washington Stock Exchange to- day, $500 changing hands at 20 Bid and asked prices on other issues re- mained practically unchanged. Capi- tal Transit stock was quiet today, closing with 143, bid and 15% asked. Effective July 1, the rate on savings deposits in Baltimore banks will be reduced to 2 per cent on the first $5.000 and 1 per cent on all balances in excess of that amount. At present the rate is 2 per cent on the first $10,000 and 1 per cent on the balance. ‘The Washington office of G. M. P. Murphy & Co. will be well represented at the District Bankers’ Association Convention, the entire managerial staff planing to attend, Charles Car- roll Morgan, A. Chester Flather and John E. Parker. At previous conven- tions Carroll Morgan has carried off some very high tennis honors." The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway reports for the four months ended April 30 net income of $8,262,548 after taxes, charges and sinking fund ap- riations, equal after dividend re- quirements on 6% per cent preferred stock to $1.07 a share (par $25) on 7,653,622 shares of common stock. This compares with $9,127,475, or $1.19 & share on 7,653,394 common shares in first four months of 1934. Dally average sales of chain grocery stores in April, 1935, showed an in- crease of about 6 per cent in dollar volume over April, 1934, and were about 115 per cent above March, 1935, the Department of Commerce reports. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, May 23.—Scattered specialties continued to push ahead in the stock market today. Profit taking in a number of issues, however, gave the list a somewhat ragged ap- | pearance. The close was a little ir- regular. Transfers approximated 1,275,000 shares. Few in Wall Street doubted that the Senate would uphold the President in his disapproval of the Patman fiat money bonus bill. At the same time it was realized that inflation could arrive by some other route and the majority of speculators were not in- clined to bet either way. Sterling, strong in early exchange dealings as a reflection of yesterday's apparently inflationary vote in the House of Representatives overriding the Chief Executive’s veto, turned back in the afternoon. The gold monies were quiet. Grains were rather firm, while cotton was unable to progress. Bonds were quiet and | mixed A zain last weck of 17.4 per cent in bank clearings over the correspond=- | ing period of 1934 indicated to many that recovery was beginning to take hold in earnest. The oil shares were among the liveliest, the majority showing ad- vances during the greater part of the session. Sugar issues such as Great Western, American Crystal and Cuban- American were also in demand at gains of fractions to around a point, There was a large turnover of Mur- ray Corp. at a gain of about a point. Deere got up 2 and Case improved. Universal Leaf Tobacco was a 2-point gainer, Others, up fractionally to a point or so, were Corn Products, United States Rubber preferred, Good- vear, St. Joe Lead. American Smelting. United States Smelting and Goodrich preferred. The rails, utilities and steels slipped only a shade in either direction.
