Risgles, Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, April 6.—Braced up as a result of late speculative buying, the corn market scored something of an advance today, and imparted relative firmness to other grains. i Evidence of rapid decrease of Chi- cago supplies of corn had a stimu- lating effect on buyers, especially as vessel loading was in progress here| today for immediate lake shipments of corn to Buffalo. The trade vir- tually ignored assertions that Argen- tine corn, duty paid, was being of- fered to Pacific Coast points at far below what domestic corn could be laid down from the Central West. Commodity Price Changes for Week BY H. N. McGill, Editor, McGill Commodity Service, Inc. AUBURNDALE, Mass., April 6 (). —Commodity prices advanced during the first week in April, now close to the peak level reached in early March. The advance was due to four groups, namely, agricultural products, live stock, hides and leather and non- ferrous metals. During the week more groups declined than advanced, as seven individual groups—industrial products, building materials, chemi- cals, fuels, paint materials, fine tex- tiles and vegetable olls—averaged less than the previous week. In each case, however, the reaction was of & limited character. Industrial prices recorded a slight decline. Industrial activity held on a relatively high plane during the first quarter of the year and preliminary figures for the first week in April show only a moderate contraction. Farm Prices Climb. Agricultural prices climbed to the highest level since February. The continuance of duststorms and sub- normal moisture have caused greater speculative interest as there are signs that 1935 will prove another year of crop deterioration. During the week prices for wheat, corn, oats, rye, eggs, sugar, flaxseed and butter averaged higher. Four items declined—cotton, wool, hay and beans. Live stock, the third major group, also moved upward rather sharply. The latest index figure is 84.5, which compares with 42.3 a year ago. Price strength in cattle and lambs more than counteracted moderately lower quotations for h The hide and leather index ad- vanced due to a one-half cent mark- up in the price of hides. Calfskins ‘weakened slightly. Non-ferrous metals reached a new high for the year, reflecting higher quotations for silver and tin. Anti- mony showed some disposition to de- cline. Fine textiles were weak, caused by lower quotations for the two impor- tant items—cotton and wool. Vegetable Oils Decline. Vegetable oils recorded the greatest proportionate decline of any of the seven groups that averaged lower as compared with a week ago. No items advanced, while weakness occurred in cocoanut, corn, cottonseed and china- wood oils. Most important changes in the Me- Gill weekly price index (1926 equaling 100) were as follows: All commodi Industrial Agricultural Live stock Fine textiles . | Vegetable oils. Daily Price Index. NEW YORK. April 6.—Index of 15 staple tommodt ¥_price: (December 185 equats 100; 1926 equals 230.5.), Col:o cago, Minneapolis, Duluth and Buf- falo, as well as in Georgian Bay ports, do not equal the supplies held in | o Chicago alone on May 1 last year. It was added that further decided curtailment of stocks of corn at some | Lead of these places will apparently be effected this month. Meanwhile, bookings of corn today to arrive here from rural sources were meager, and demand good for shipments from Chicago. i Helping to rally wheat prices from | early declines was the fact that the| s official forecast for next week pointed to but little moisture in the great plains area. Brisk advances of wheat quotations at Liverpool and Buenos Aires were also of some aid. ‘The action of the Liverpool market was ascribed to renewed buying of futures there and to scarcity of Aus- tralian offerings, as well as to better inquiry from millers. Reports of improvement in soil and ‘weather conditions both for domestic| july. Spring and Winter wheat had only a temporary bearish influence. Provisions advanced owing mainly to comparative scantiness of offerings “a‘ i 1 markets tod ange at principal markets today: T TR .
