B—10 Progress of Symphony Is Exhibited in Last Concert After Four Years Washington's Orchestra Per- forms in Very Satisfactory Manner With Difficult Compositions—Bauer as Soloist. BY ALICE EVERSMAN. 1 HE last concert of the Thursday series of the National I Symphony Orchestra yesterday seemed to demonstrate in 2 particular manner not only the technical gain of the orchestra in this, its fourth season, but also its finer sen- sitiveness to the musical content of the numbers played. The | performance can be summed up as one of the best the orchestra | has ever presented, especially in the communicative sense. The | aliveness of the performers reached out to the audience, caught a responsive echo and carried it along in a richer sympathy with their interpretations. The complete conviction of work of a man who was content with the divine management of things earthly was in sharp contrast to the passionate questioning of the spirit of Tschaikowsky in his “Fourth Symphony.” The restless effort to es- cape the sense of the preordained, the pall of melancholy which shut out the light which Bach saw so clearly and the desire for some tangible as- suagement of his suffering is expressed The impressive chorale, fit- | this | while the sonority and vitality of the | tonal volume was inspiring. The Ravel concerto, which the celebrated pianist, Harold Bauer, was to have interpreted, | could not be given and the lovely‘ | Schumann “Concerto in A Minor”| | was substituted. Mr. Bauer is too well known and too deeply intrenched | in the affections of the public of this city to need any introduction. His | playing of the concerto contained that superfine sensitiveness, exquisite tonal | color and ripe musicianship which | he commands so abundantly. The enthusiasm of his reception brought him out repeatedly and to the final giving of an encore, Myra Hess' ar- | rangement of Bach's “Chorale.” Mr. | Bauer is a splendid artist and a master THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGT BANKRUPT TRADER ASKS CHICAGO REINSTATEMENT Jesse L.
