BANK SUIT LISTS 357 comare i STEFFENS' WEALTH Radical Political ~ Writer Sued in Alleged Attempt to Dodge Liability. By the Associated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 -] Lincoln Steffens and his wife, Ella| Winter, both noted writers and cham- | pions of radical political beliefs, were dragged into a decidedly capitalistic limelight yesterday by a suit filed in Federal Court. The suit described Steffens as the | holder of a $35000 note signed by “Owen D. Young of New York” and secured by a mortgage on Connecticut property. 1t itemized figures indicating Stef- fens was the posscfsm‘ of a moderate fortune. The sult was brought by H. W. Douglas, receiver for the California National Bank of Sacramento. It alleged Steffens had transferred title to valuable property to his wife in at- | tempting to evade liability as a stockholder in the closed institution. | The list included the $35.000 Young note, three town lots in Carmel, Calif., | worth $15.000: $9,000 worth of bonds | and all Steffens’ book royalties and| stocks in varlous corporations. The securities mentioned included | 105 shares of stock in the Crowell Publishing Co., 50 shares of Union Carbide & Carbon, a $1.000 American | Power & Light bond, a $1.100 Can- adian government bond and $7,000 in railway bonds. Steffens has written that while he did not believe in the capitalistic | system he saw no reason for not tak- ing advantage of the opportunities presented to him as long as he had to live under it.
