By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 22.—With Wall Street split into two clearly defined camps over who shall be the next president of the New York Stock Ex- change, Richard Whitney, the ex- | change’s present head, kept rigidly silent at his weekly press conference yesterday when asked whether he would run on an independent ticket if denied the regular nomination. The two factions are divided as follows: Those who wish a new front for the exchange, bringing what they feel should be an improvement in the in- stitution’s public esteem. This group FHE g would have as nominee for the office Charles R. Gay, senior partner of the 107-year-old firm of Whitehouse & Co. Those who favor no change in the chief executive would have Whitney succeed himself. They feel that Whit- ney has seen the exchange through its most trying period and he should not quit while under fire. In the past nomination by the regu- lar Nominating Committee has as- sured the man named of election. The five men of the Nominating Committee are up against a delicate job of deciding which of the two lead- ing candidates is to the best interest of the exchange. It likely will be a nervous and ex- citable crowd which will gather nround the nominating bulletin which & gray-uniformed page will post on the floor of the exchange April 8.
