A—16 xz% FINANCIAL. INSURANCE SALES IN CAPITAL SOAR Underwriters Do 35 Per Cent More Business Than in February, 1934. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Sales of ordinary life insurance in the District of Columbia again Jeaped forward in February, the National Capital's persuasive underwriters doing | 35 per cent more business than in| February, 1934. The results make th(" average gain of 13 per cent for the whole United. States look pretty small. Adding the remarkable record bung up in January, sales for the first two months of the year in this city were 37 per cent higher than last year. Only four States in the Union made a better showing than the District. The list was topped by Montana with an upward bound of 59 per cent, ac- cording to the Life Insurance Sales Research Bureau of Hartford, Conn. ‘West Virginia followed Washington with a gain of 21 per cent, North Caro- lina scored an advance of 19 per cent, while Maryland reported an 18 per| cent upturn. Virginia was close to Maryland with a 17 per cent improve- ment and South Carolina, also in the | South Atlantic group, did 5 ver cent | more business than a year ago. | February sales in the Capital tma]od sales in Maryland amount- | 000; West Vir, <inia, $4,349.f 000 North Carolina, $6,553,000. and South Caro- lina, $2,543,000. Sales in the South| Atlantic section for the first two | months of 1935 were 25 per cent better than a year ago, just the same as the national average gain. In Washington 72 per cent of the life insurance companies having offices here reported that their February policies exceed the February, 1934. tals. From every angle the report ears out the substantial gains re- vealed so far this year by other im- portant business barometers. Declares New Financing Easy. Chairman Kennedy of the Securities Exchange Commission declares that the commission has arranged to allow new corporate financing to be carried out without hardships and reports applications totaling $200.000.000 in addition to the recent issues amount- ing to $85,000.000. He thinks business men ought to be freer in asking for new issues. After referring to the Swift and Pacific Gas issues, he said in his New York speech: “Can any reasonable man say that the control of those great corporations | is in the hdnds of men recklessly im- | prudent about the management of | their affairs? And if these men. after | careful consideration of all the prob- lems involved, have concluded that there is no unreasonable liability, burden or responsibility imposed by the new securities law, who dares to assert any longer that the Government | has made corporate financing legally | impossible? “The fact is that able business men wisely advised, have flashed a green light signaling that the road ahead | is clear of disaster. that the hurdles | of legal cémplexities, expensive fees and laborious detail have been prac- tically eliminated, that now there can no longer be any excuse for further delay. “We expect some sizable financing will follow. We expect a declaration of faith in the future of our country such as has characterized American business at the turning point in every previous crisis. Storage Dividend Declared. Directors of the Security Storage | Co., 1140 Fifteenth street, have de- clared a dividend of $1.25 per share on the capital stock, payable April 10 to shareholders of record on April, Secretary C. P. Ravenburg announced today. This dividend follows the 3 per cent semi-annual dividend voted this week by the National Metropolitan Bank and dividends on the common and preferred stocks of Woodward & Lothrop also declared this week. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad has de- clared a dividend of $2.50 on the pre- ferred stock, payable May 10 to stock of record April 26. The company also declared semi-annual interest of 2 per cent on the certificate of indebted- ness, payable May 1 Similar payments were made six months ago. There are only $196,700 ($100) preferred shares outstanding and $135,100 certificates of indebted- ness. Dividends on the preferred and interest on the certificates are payable only when earned. Both issues are closely held. Two More Treasury Issues. The Secretary of the Treasury has invited tenders for two series of dis- count bills, aggregating $100,000,000, to be dated March 27. One series of $50,000,000 will be 182-day bills, ma- turing September 25, while the other of $50,000,000 will be 272-day bills, maturing December 24. Tenders will be received at the Federal Reserve banks up to 2 p.m. on March 25. Preliminary report of Virginia Elec- tric & Power Co. and subsidiaries for year ended December 31, 1934, shows net income of $2,698,426 after Federal taxes, interest, depreciation, etc., equivalent to $13.82 a share on 195,297 no-par shares of $6 preferred stock. ‘This compares with $3.042294, or $15.58 a share on 195299 preferred shares in 1933. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, March 22—Tension over references made in various as to apparent chances of war in Europe had a bull- ish influence on grain, values late today. At the day's top, May wheat was about 5 cents a bushel higher than Monday's inside level. Contributing strength to grains was a late authori- tative denial of reports the Argentine government had lowered its minimum price for new corn. Wheat closed firm, l:a3; above yesterday's finish; May, 95%a3%. Corn unchanged to 3; higher; May, 78%a%. Oats, % to 3% up. Provi- sions showed a rise of 15 to 27 cents. Unexpected strength in Liverpool wheat prices, combined with contin ied dry weather in most of the Southwest- ern area of the domestic wheat belt, also were bullish factors. Something of an offset at times were currency fluctuations in Belgium and cable re- ports from Buenos Aires that the minimum price for the new Argentine corn crop had been fixed at equivalent of 287; cents. These tended to create caution on price bulges. Smallness of wheat shipments to Europe from Argentina and Australia had a bullish effect on the Liverpool wheat market. Included in the Argentine shipments the last week were 273,000 bushels of wheat to the United States. Less was heard as to unfavorable weather con- ditions in the West and Southwest today, some light rains being reported in various places. The Modern Miller says: “Drougiit reports from the West and Southwest are increasing in severity and coming from a wider area. “Actual damage to Winter wheat so far appears to be largely confined to Western Kansas, Nebraska and parts of Oklahoma, Texas and Eastern Colo- rado, but the high winds have rapis depleted the surface moisture in the sections of the States Growing Chances of War in| growing | | which produce the bulk of the sur- plus.” WHEAT— Open L0lg-le - n' July ..
