G—4 TRENDS IRREGULAR IN' CURB TRADING Specialties Fluctuate Wide- ly—Cheshorough Shares at New 1934 Peak. BY BERNARD S. O'HARA, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 8.—Wide fluctuations in speciaities helped to| give the Curb market an uneven tone today. Dealings were active for a Sat- urday session, transfers approximating | 137.000 shares, compared with 83,000 a week ago Chesborough Manufacturing staged a spectacular advance of 16!, points to 148, a new high for the year, in response to declaration of an extra dividend of $5, as announced after the market's close yesterday. Carrier Corp. rose more than 3. De- clines of around 2 points were shown | by Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Fajardo Sugar and General Tire & Rubber. In the utility division, American Gas & Electric reacted nearly a point, but Electric Bond & Share ended un- changed. United Gas preferred closed & shade lower. Gulf Oil and Distillers Corp.-Sea- grams dipped around a point each. Wright Hargreaves, International Pe- troleum. Sherwin-Williams and Swift & Co. held fairly steady. Commodity Price Changes for Week. BY H. N. McGILL, Editor \ir(- I Commodity Service, Inc., Auburndale. Mass AI'BURN'DALE, Mass., (P —Commodity prices first week in December registered a | moderate advance, carrying the price ! level to the highest point since late September. During the past six weeks the underlying trend of commodity prices has moved upward in direct alignment with the seasonal eleva- tion in industrial activity. The mos recent upswing was not due to an specific group but was general, December 8 during the higher, only 2 were lower, groups remain unchanged Industrial prices increased slightly, | caused by a higher price average for fuels ,hides and leather, paint ma- | terials, ferrous metals and vegetable oils. Farm Prices Climb. Agricultural prices also moved up- | ward during the week, despite the fact that more items declined than advanced. Price strength in corn, oats, barley, rve, peanuts and butter more than offset the lower level, as compared with a week ago for wheat, eggs. cotton, hay, beans, sugar and flaxseed. Live stock represents one of the two groups that declined. The ex- tent of the reaction, however, was of | limited proportions. but both cattle and hogs average slightly less than a | week ago. Lamb prices averaged higher. The hide and leather group moved upward under the leadership of hides, which advanced !2 cent during the week. Ferrous metals were slightly higher. caused by strength in steel scrap. Fuels also averaged higher than a week ago due entirely to an increase in kerosene prices. Fine textiles represent the second | group to decline. The reaction was of extremely small proportions and reflected lower quotations for cotton | as well as silk. Coarse textiles ruled higher as the price increase in jute more than off- set the price decline in sisal. Vegetable oils continued the broad recovery of recent weeks, reaching a new high on the current movement under the leadership of further | strength in coron, cottonseed. lin- seed, China wood and soya bean oils. NEW YORK. December 8 (#).—Cur- tis B. Dall, former son-in-law of Pres- ident Roosevelt, has retired as a part- ner in the New York Stotk Exchange firm of Fenner & Beane, it was an- nounced today by the Stock Exchange. as out of 14 individual groups 8 averaged | while 1| | Winnipeg I TREASURY GIVEN STRONG SUPPORT; TRADE STILL RISES (Continued Prom First Page.) ties are now being missed because of the unpopularity of foreign dollar bonds. With trade improvement in South and Central America and cur- rency stabilization in Europe, there would be a surprising recovery in scores of issues now quoted at heavy discounts. ‘The business curve moves slowly but surely upward from week to week. One trade journal suggests that “a creep- ing recovery movement may be getting under way.” There is no doubt of I this. Since the middle of October each week has witnessed a small gain in the volume of iron and steel pro- | duction. Electric power output is at the highest since July. owing to an | | unusual spurt in New England. Those ‘who canvass the retail trade predict the greatest amount of Christmas | buying in five years. The housing problem does not move so freely as one might hope, but its expansion is definite and, little by lit- tle, it is absorbing more mechanics | into the building industry and assist- ing the materials trade. There are numerous reports from different sec- tions of the country of an improve- | ment in the real estate situation. Va- cancies are decreasing, the low level of rents appears to have been reached and the beginning of a demand for certain kinds of properties is visible. A loan of $68.000,000 by Holland to Belgium this week has not so far | greatly changed the position of the borrowing country. Its exchange con- tinues to wobble. It seems inevitable | that it will finally have to be adjusted | to a practical economic problem. The | necessity on the part of the United States and Great Britain of arriving at a point of agreement as to the parity of their currencies is here re- emphasized. ‘They have the fate of | the gold bloc countries in their hands. To wait for a collapse before trying to | administer a cure would be one of the greatest mistakes of the depression. (Copyrignt 4.
