THE 'SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, HOTEL REOPENING FORWINTER INFLUX Atlantic City Enjoying Great Popularity—1935 Events Scheduled. ATLANTIC CITY, December 8.— Further evidence that Atlantic City 1s rapidly becoming as great a year- | around resort as a Summer center comes in the announcement that the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, closed shortly after Labor day, is to reopen Decerh- ber 19. ,» It is the first time in the memories of the oldest inhabitants that a large beach-front hotel has opened in mid- Winter. COLONIA, Uruguay, December 8.— Buried treasure, legendary golden riches of the Incas of Peru, including the crown of Athualpa, last Inca King have this River Plate port all excited. Excavators are digging a _great hole in the sand at Honda Beach, near here, seeking millions which, if old tales are true, were buried here more than 200 years ago by the pi- rates Moreau and Molina, who, after hiding their find, went out to sea on another series of raids, but met an armed British barkentine. In the ensuing battle both Moreau and Mo- lina were killed. Survivor Tells. Only one sailor of the pirate crew was spared, according to local ver- land to be hanged, but before he died | he told how Moreau and Molina had buried their loot at Colonia. ‘The gold. the story goes, was taken from Viceroy Laserna of Peru, who ingots, earmarked for the King of Spain. Moreau and Molina intercept- ed Laserna's craft and made off with the ingots and also the crown of Athualpa, last of the Inca monarchs, executed by the great conquistador Francisco Pizarro. The treasure is believed to have been buried, to give the legends all the conventional treasure trove de- tails, on a dark and stormy night in 1808. Sought in 1883. A British expedition dug unsuccess- fully for the treasure in 1883. One of the other leaders is Maj. 0 Caram- bula, jr., son of a former chief of pcuce of Coxonu, who was intimately th the unsuccessful amuh -nempu to find the treasure. Maj. Carambula claims to have found a curiously carved stgne at Playa Honda which strengthened his treasure theories. Such a stone, he said, figured as a key in the British excavation plans of 1883, but they never found it. It was, he avers, mentioned by the pirate hanged in England.
