GROUP IN DECLINE Junior Rail List Shows Larg-| & est Losses as Selling Develops. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 9.—There were additional sharp declines today in speculative railroad and public utility bonds, but a stronger market for high- grade corporation issues. Dollar loans were influenced by the current discus- sion of the ability of the remaining gold countries to maintain their cur- Tency standard. In the reaction from the high prices of last week the junior raNroad bonds show individual losses ranging from 3 to 6 points. About the same amount of decline has occurred in the second and third grade public utilities. The small group of active industrial bonds has meanwhile declined 2 to 3 points. Even With these losses the average of the market still hclds well above the high Teached immediately after the bank holiday. Some of the sharpest declines today ‘were in Baltimore & Ohio refunding 6s, Southern Railway general 6s, Ca- nadian Pacific 41¢s, Missouri-Pacific 5s, Erje 5s, Northern Pacific 5s, Alleghany Corporaticn 5s and Illinois Central 434s. Postal Telegraph 5s dropped 1% points and were 5 points under the best of last week, while similar losses occur- red in the International Telegraph is- sues. North America Co. 5s and Utilities Power & Light 5s, as well as American & Foreign Power 5s, reacted a point on small transactions. Consolidated QGas 5s were up-nearly a point, showing a rally of about 6 points from their Jows. The decision of the United States Supreme Court on public utility rates has so far had no effect on power and light bonds. Atchison general 4s, which declined to about 83 a short time ago and last ‘week were as low as 85!:, crossed 90. American Telephone & Telegraph de- benture 5s were likewise strong and with a point rise showed a recovery of 7 points from their low. Other high- grade corporation bonds again failed to indicate any alarm on the part of in- dividual or institutional holders over the threat of inflation, and the steadiness of United States Government issues to- day further confirmed the confidence ©of this section of the investment public. The abrupt decline late Monday in the French government issues was fol- Jowed early today by a recovery of over a point in the 7 and 7' per cent loans. On the other hand, the French City 6s, which yesterday had shown no net loss, declined 1'% to 2'. points and there was another drop in Belgian dollar loans amounting to 1!: to 212 points. United Kingdom 5';s lost nearly a point and Canadian bonds were heavy. German government 5':s were stronger than the s, though neither showed much - provement. Some of the other Ger- man dollar issues were decidedly weak. The market for New York City bonds is unsettled and at an average lower than in several years. Deep anxiety is beginning to be felt by holders of these obligations over the outlook for them. New York Cotton Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 9.—Though cotton prices opened dcwn a dollar a bale | today, the setback of 2 half a cent from | rec:nt high levels brcught in a wave of | buying 2nd the list clesed cnly 2 to 5 points lower than yesterdey. Reports | that the House had defeated the price- fixing amendment to the farm bill stimulated buying toward the close. Spots were reduced 5 p:ints to 8.35. Special Dispatch to The Sta: NEW YORK, May 9.—After open- ing lower today, the Curb Exchange steadied. Shares moved so narrowly and indecisively for the next two hours that the list as a whole was virtually unchanged. Electric Bond & Share well illus- trated the general trend, or, rather, lack of trend, as it was unchanged at midday from its previous closing quo- tation. This was true of Cities Service, | Standard Oil of Indiana and Niagara- Hudson Power at this period. News from remote corners of the |earth and from trade centers of the Nation was for the most part con- structive.
