Spectal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 9.—A series of narrow and indecisive price fluctuations left stocks slightly higher at the close of today’s session. The market was never weak, nor was it strong. It simply drifted about, but taking everything into account its ac tion was encouraging rather than oth- erwise. Sterling exchange was weak and the dollar correspondingly stiong at the start, but that position was reversed in the later afternoon. Dealers thought they saw the result of operations by the British _equalization fund in the mar ket. Commodities were reactionary. Wheat broke 2'3 to 2% cents. Cotton was lower most of the day. The outstandingly strong featureof ‘the stock market was Industrial Rayon. Stocks opened with small and irreg= ular changes from the preceding close and they held within a narrow range all through the first two hours. Very little selling came into the market be- cause of the weakness that developed in the last hour of business yesterday, and the offerings that did appear were well absorbed. On the other hand, the list found it difficult to make progress on the upside. Except for the oil industry, which continues in the throes of an orgy of price cutting, the business news was fa- vorable. The St. Paul Railroad rbported loadings for the week ended May 6 well above the same week a year ago, and that was true also of the Chicago & Northwestern. This increaz in traffic was one cf the most encouraging de velopments of the day. Lumber book- ings were reported hlgher for the week |ended April 29 than in any week in 1932, except two in September. It was admitted that signs of revival needed confirmation from retail trade, but con- fidence was expressed that this con- firmation would be forthcoming shortly. {Vleks to that effect were strengthened ‘ by announcements of wage increases in various quarters. | Accumulation continued in the gold mining stocks, bought on the theory that this was the only legal way for | the hoarders of gold to achieve their | ends. Dome Mines was the leader of the group. Copper stocks were a little | firmer also. but trading in them was in limited volume. The best acting stock among industrials was General Motors, as it had been in recent sessions. Speculative buying was reported in Packard, but it was insufficient to have any effect on the price. Chrysler was strong for a time, reflecting the opti- | mistic attitude toward the motor in- dustry in general. MONEY MARKET. NEW YORK.
