ROCHESTER, N. Y., October 13.— A tiny gland in the head controls the production of milk by rabbits for their young. This discovery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, although at present in its earliest stages, promises |possibumes of new experiments in the lfeedlnx of infants and in the produc- tion of milk by cows. The milk control is the npituitary, one of the endocrine or ductless glands, which already has been established as the master gland in several of the im- portant functions of the entire endo- crine system. Previously this gland has been shown to control growth, details of personal abpearance, part of the development of sex glands, some types of obesity and in certain animals the coloring or complexion. The pituitary is a very small gland between the base of the brain and the roof of the mouth. Rabbits Given Extract. ‘The milk-producing experiments were made under direction of Dr. George W. Corner of the department of anatomy. Young female rabbits which were not mothers and which had even been ster- llized to prevent motherhood were caused to give milk in about normal amounts by an extract from the pitui- tary glands of sheep. Dr. Corner reports that the Roches- ter experiments make it likely that a hormone in the pituitary secretions is the direct cause of lactation. Further- more, search for contributing influ- ences from several factors other than the pituitary gland indicates that it alone is the control. A different fe- male hormone, that of the corpus lu- teum, has long been suspected of hav- ing & part in milk production. In Dr. Corner’s experiments this gland seemed to have no effect, but experiments are being continued to see if there may be any obscure relationship between its effect and that of the pituitary. Complicated Chemical Substances. The pituitary extracts. Dr. Corner states, are very complicated chemical substances, and there may be some other mechanism not yet found which restrains secretion until the proper Iy fore direct benefits can be sought from applying this knowledge to human beings, the pituitary extract must be purified chemically to a greater degree, to free it of harmful substances which it now unfortunately contains. This imvolves learning precisely which ele- | ments _in the extract cause the lacta- tion effect. LENINGRAD_PRESS_FIGHTS ‘INDIFFERENCE TO FLEAS’ Public Held Taking View Insect ‘Was Created to Prevent Man Sleeping on One Side. LENINGRAD (NANA)—There is something of a press campaign against the indifference of the inhabitants of Leningrad to the millions of fleas which are invading the houses, theaters, res- taurants and clubs. Leningrad workers, it is complained. take the view that the flea is a noble insect. created to pre- vent man from sleeping on one side only, & practice that is very bad for the heart. The Krasnaya Gazetta demands the immediate mobilization of public opin- fon to combat this small but numerous foe of cultural revolution. The paper refuses to take the view that the flea does no special harm to man and will not tolerate it, in commen with the city toilers, “until the end of the sec- ond five-year plan!” (Copyright. 1931. by the North American Newspaper Alliance.
