"THE reception last evening at the Pan-Americaz Union in honor of the delegates to the fourta Pan- American Commercial Conference was, musically, a festive occasion. Strains of Spanish music greeted the visitors as they entered the lower court yard. The Marimba Band, brought from New York for the occasion, gave a program citief- 1y of South American composers cf music, whose swaying, accentuated rhythms fitted perfectly with the sefting of palms and lighted foun- tains. The instruments used by the band were novel and caused much inter- est among the guests. The marim- ba, a product of Guatemala, Is made entirely of wood having keys with sound boxes below, which are drummed upon by wooden sticks tipped with rubber balls. Four or five men play this instrument at once. The double bass is, further- more, plucked and several smaller instruments, among them the ma- racas, consisting of two hollow gourds filled with “ammunition” are shaken. There were also two small Cuban drums and a cymbal. The “Dance to the Sun God" by Elie, with its primitive rather monoto- nous rhythms, and the overture from “If I Were King” by Adam were among the best selections.
