J0FLY SEASINS] WITH 9 LIVES LOST Graf Carries 200 Across the Atlantic—Post and Gatty Feat Outstanding. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 30.—Avia- tion, fast-growing youngster, shook a sturdy fist at old Father Ocean today and exulted. Records for 1931, just compiled, in- dicate that the great seas, with all their terrors, are yielding at last before the progress of man's brain-child. More than 250 persons crossed the( Atlantic or Pacific Oceans by air since the beginning of the year and only nine | lives were lost. Compare this with 1937, year of Lindbergh's famous flight, 'when 17/ persons lost their lives in attempting to span the Atlantic and only 16 got| across. No one crossed the Pacific that | year, which was considered a banner | one in aviation’s annals, but 10 lives were lost as & result of the Dole race from Oakland to Honolulu. Graf Carries 200. | The Graf Zeppelin, now engaged in ferry service across the Atlantic on & strictly business basis, accounted for nearly 200 of this year's ocean pas- sages by making two round trips be- tween her home port at Friedrichs- chafen, Germany, and Pernambuco, Brazil. Forty men crossed the South Atlantic in 10 planes with Gen. Italo Balbo, Ttalian air minister. This feat was marked by tragedy. Five of Balbo's men died in accidents which befell two of the dozen planes which started the journey frcm _ Bolama, Portuguese Guinea, to Natal, Brazil. A giant flying boat from the land of engineering marvels—Germany’s DO-X —brought 13 persons safely across the Atlantic in a_12,000-mile flight from Germany to the United States, which included a journey across the South Atlantic by way cf the Cape Verde Islands and Fernando do Norohna Island to Natal, Brazil. Post and Gatty Lead. Post and Gatty flew both the At- lantic and Pacific Oceans in their startling rush that set a globe-circling record. Four other pairs of airmen crcssed the Atlamitic from West to East and the German, Von Gronau, brought his crew of three here in an East-West fight, Col. Lindbergh and his wife flew from Alaska to Kamchatka with one stop. Besides the five lost on the Balbo ex- pedition, two other pairs of flyers drop- ped from sight: Parker Cramer and Oliver Paquette, in a Detroit-to-Copen- hagen venture, and Mrs. Beryl Hart and William Maclaren in a West-East At- lantic attempt.
