A—14 waw PARLEYS ON G0LD HAVE BEEN URGE[] Silver and 0il Conferences Also Favored by Several Legislators. By the Associated Press. International conferences on gold, sil- ver and ofl have been proposed in many quarters. Lord Reading, foreign secretary for England, says his country will seek an International conference to consider problems related to the world gold sup- ply. Renewal of agitation for an in- ternatignal silver conference followed the action of England in ordering a s.x- month suspension of its gold standrrd to meet its financial crisis. Legislators Favor Idea. | In this country Representative Kelly of Pennsylvania, favoring an interna- tional silver conference, said Congress at its next session will consider the matter of stabilizing the price of silver. Senator Walsh of Montana, hopes re- cent developments will lead to an in- ternational conference for rehabilitation of silver, and Senator Wheeler, also of Montana, declared the werld must sta- bilize the metal. Senator King of Utah said the European financial crisis makes an international silver conference im- perative. Steps looking to international con- ferences on silver are in process of being taken in England. Lord Hunsdon has planned to submit in the House cf Lords a motion to reques his government to confer with the United States and the other governments of the empire 7S to the need for raising the present level of wholesale prices and the desirability of dealing with the question of silver 80 as to increase the purchasing power of a large portion of the population o( the world by stabilizing the price of silver at some appropriate level. Ofl producers in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, have urged the calling of an international conference to prorate oil production during the next three years, in order to prevent overproduc- tion and to increase its pice level. il Parley Proposed. Pending further consideration of the matter by Government officials, it was said that the American Petroleum In- stitute might call a conference for tne purpose of regulating the output in the United States, Caneda, Rusaa, South America, Mexico, Europe and the Orient. 7 The oil representatives plan to submit the proposal to the State Department within a month. They state the extent to which ofl imports are curtailed will determine whether the industry will seek a tariff on oil from Congress, which, when it meets, will be furnished by the Tariff Commission with a re- port on domestic and foreign oil pro- duction_costs. NEW YORK, September 30.—The bond market met a continued volume of liquidation in all classes of securi- tles, which depressed prices to new lows in most cases, At the same time, however, there was a consderably better ‘undertone, owin: to the success of Pranier MacDonal in forestalling a general election in Britain this Fall. Thus assured that the efforts of the British government to restabilize sterling would not be in- terrupted Wall Street demonstrated its improved sentiment by bidding for fair- ly Jarge amounts of ‘United States Gov- ernment long-term bonds, prime cor- poration issues and the best of the foreign dollar deceriptions somewhat closer to the market than was the case Tuesday. There was still a fair amount of cf- ferings of United Sla'&l Governments. Prices were off ¥ to Tgolnt in the case of the active issues. e inactive first Liberty (second convertible) 41;s, how- ever, which have not sold since July, sold 1% points under their previous price. Brokers declared that offerings of Treastry bonds from out-of-town banks and the smaller metropolitan in- stitutions were not unusually large, but sald some heavy blocks were offered from abroad. Naturally it would be profitable for citizens of countrics with depreciated currencies to sell American Treasuries. Gold Money Is Supplant- ing the Pound in World Markets. BY J. R. BRACKETT, Associated Press Business Writer, NEW YORK, September 30.—The American dollar s rolling speedily forward into new flelds of interna- tional finance—while the historic pound sterling flutters in the wind and the franc wheels steadily along, an un- known quantity. Pushed off the gold standard, the pound has become an uncertain me- dium of foreign exchange. An inter- national trader who bought goods on the sterling pound basis in the morn- ing may find that pound higher or lower in value by night, with the re- sult that he does not know the amount he must pay. Dollar Position Strengthened. Money in international trade lJmO:tmnl ll‘;e this oo Tmany buys wool from Argentina. German marks are none too stable in value and Argentina insists on another medium of payment. So Germany takes her unstable marks and buys dollars, because the traditionally firm pound is wavering.
