Supervisor Sylvester Adriano of San Prancisco spurned the bottle of water received from Porter and drank to the health of President Paul Doumer and the people of France with what he de- scribed a5 “fine old California wine.” “To toast the President of France and his people with water, after they treated us with such bountiful hospi- tality, and toast to our President and the American people with the choicest of Prench wines, scems to me a gratui- tous act of discourtesy,” Adriano said. “The only regret is that I am pro- hibited from sending a bottle of the wine to the other 23 mayors of the rty’ who, T am sure, would much fer 1t to Los Angeles water.” Two Refuse Toast. Mayor Bryce B. Smith of Kansas water, but MaYor Victor Miller of St. Louis and Mayor James Key of Atlanta refused. The St. Louis mayor turned his bottle of water over to his secretary, who said he would pass it on to a janitor. Mayor Key, whom Porter said cared very little for water ss a bev- erage while in Prance, took the attitude that Porter's action in Havre was dis- courteous and that the incident should mot_be revived. “I was unjustly accused of walking out on the toast in Havre, but I now drink a real toast to the health of the President of France,” the Los Angeles snayor said lifted a glass of wa'er.
