Ayres, chlef clerk of the smu, Department since 1924 and long | prominently identified with Govern- { | ment service in the Capital, died at his home at Woodside, Md., teday after a month’s illness, He was 64 years old. Secretary of State Stimson in an- nouncing Mr. Ayres' death declared: “He was one of the most loyal and efficlent men in the service. His loss. will be deeply felt.” Mr. Ayres was widely known in this city, where he had for many years been active in the Masonic fraternity and other org8nizations. For three years he was an officer in the Masonic Grand Lodge of the District, among the offices held being those of junior and senior grand steward. He also was past master of Stansbury Lodge No. 24, F. A. A. M. Merchant and Farmer. He was a merchant-farmer and gen- eral agent for a large concern up to the time he was 30 years old. He began his service with the government in the legal division of the United States Patent Office in 1896, serving there until the early part of this century. Bubsequently he was employed as pur- chasing officer in the Interior Depart- ment, during which service he estab- lished a standardization of filing fur- niture. During the World War he was a mem- | ber of the District Council of Defense iand the War Industries Board and the United War Campaign Board. Member of Committee. Following the war, he served as a member of the Interdepartmental Com | mittee which considered the disposition to be made of war material. In 1923 he was appointed administrative as- sistant at the Department of Commerce and in the following year was made | chief clerk of the State Department. He represented the State Department at the Sesquicentennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1926 and at the Inter- | national Exposition at Seville, Spain, | in 1929, Mr. Ayres was a native of Hopewell | Township, N. J. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Edith Ayres; a son, Robert Ayres; a daughter, Mrs. Julla Randolph Sheppard, and two grandchildren.
