LISBON, April 30.—Federal forces abcard Portuguese warships off Madeira began a general attack on the island this afternoon, directing an intensive bombardment against rebel forces which installed a junta government at Fun- chal nearly a month ago. Three detachments of infantry were landed at Machito, 15 miles northeast of Funchal under cover of the naval guns. Seaplanes supported the attack. Some of the shells fell in the popu- lous districts, but Funchal itself was deserted. Preliminary fighting in the past few days had frightened most of the inhabitants out of town.
