PAJAMAS IN DRAW WITH NIGHT SHIRTS Vivid Sleeping Garments Waved by Health Leaders Debating Scientific Issue. A vivid pair of orange and white striped pajamas, and a billowing, old fashioned white night shirt were waved before a distinguished gathering of public health officials late yesterday afternoon at the Willard Hotel, as a public climax to the lobby debate which has waged for days there over the rela- tive merits of these two competing night flfi:flfl. y were flaunted as evidence in the debate which came out in the open be- fore a highly amused and entertained group of State and provincial health authorities of North America. These men have followed the fight with keen- est interest ever since it threatened at times to break up the seriousness of scientific discussions. Clowning along through his argument with the mock earnestness of a crusader, » tall South Carolinian, Dr. J. A. Hayne hurled blasts of his wrath against the pajama as a forelgn importation. He charged it with being the cause of un- rest in America. He even went so far as to declare in facetious vein that the decline and fall of the Democratic party was attributable to its forsaking the night garments of their granddaddies. Declared Foe of Cotton. “The nightshirt and the nightgown,"” he declared with emphasis, “are the foundation of American civilization and family life. The nightshirt consumes more cotton. “Pajamas, which are mostly made of silk, do not use as much cotton as night shirts, and let me tell you that pajamas are about to deprive King Cot- ton of his crown.” Dr. G. H. Bigelow of Massachusetts contended “pajamas are more modest, and more graceful, especially for slid- ing down banisters in case of a fire.” On a vote, the debate unofficially was declared a draw. Sessions Close Today. Sessions of the conference of State and territorial health officers with the United States Public Health Service, which are being attended by the same group of officials, were to close today in the Willard. An outstanding recom- mendation this morning was a sugges- tion to the seurgeon general of the Public Health Service that a board be organized to draw a set of min- imum requirements for sanitary con- trol of bottled mineral waters. This followed an address by Dr. W. S. Prisble, chemist in charge of the office of co-operation food, drug and in- secticide administration, United States t of Agriculture. Dmnwm elected for the following afte: the Con: yesterda rnoon by - 1’:‘!’!‘!‘!“ of su’u and Provincial Health Authorities as follows: President, . T. B. Beatty of Salt Lake City; vice ent, Dr. W. J. Bell, deputy min- of health for the Province of On- tario, Canada; members of the Execu- tive Committee, Dr. C. W. Garrison of Arkansas, the retiring president; Dr. 8. H. Osborn of Connecticut, Dr. W. r. xlnfi:l Indiana, and Dr. F. E. Trot- of Hawall. Outstanding among the recommenda- tions was that by Dr. Felix J. Under- wood for the Committee on Child Hy- glene, who scored the failure of Con- to provide adequate Federal aid the distributors of pasteurized of raw milk, reported that “if it can be proven that the average American child which has been fed pasteurized milk shows about the same increase in m and the same general state of as the average American child which has been fed raw milk, this will be sufficient to convince the average American parent that the public health advantages of teurization may be utilized in infant feeding without dietary disadvantage.” The conference decided to ask that Surg. Gen. Cumming urge makers of anti-freeze solutions to safeguard the K:bllc from danger, when the public is ely to use the solution as a beverage. Plans are to ask that such solutions be labeled as poisons and colored to be made easily recognizable. CARDINAL GIVES FETE Students and Faculty of New Col- lege in Rome Dined.
