Some queer birds hide in Haitian thickets. An exhaustive catalogue of the bird | life of a reputedly birdless island has just been issued by the Smithsonian Institution, following a series of collect- ing expeditions. Among the birds found there by Dr. Alexander Wetmore, assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, is the second small- est in the world—the zumbadorcito, or vervain hummer. It is, he says. about the size of a bee. Despite its tiny size, Dr. Wetmore records, it is extremely pugnacious, and will not hesitate to dash headlong at & bird as big as the mockingbird which chances to offend it. Inconspicuous because of its size and extremely rapid movements, Dr. Wet- more says, the ornithologist is directed | t by its song. easily audible at & nce of 75 yards ‘Occosianally,” he says, “this song s given cn the wing, but ordinarily the ! bird is moved to vocal exp:-csion when | at rest on some perch In the sun. The | song seemingly is greatly enjoyed. as it may continue without ccssation for sev- | eral minutes.” Feeds on Small Lizards. Another curious creature described by | Dr. Wetmore is the lizard cuckoo, & | bird common through the country dis- | tricts.» which feeds largely on small | itzards. “They move,” he says, “in leisurely manner, walking with long strides along the tree limbs. often crouching and proceeding stealthily in search of their insect or lizard prey or crawling like great rats along dense branches near the ground. When flight is necessary 1t is performed with rapid beats of the relatively small, rounded wings, and | ends in a sail with spread pinions. The | whole reminds one of the supposed | methods of flight of archeopteryx, the | most ancient of known fossil birds.” | Lizard cuchoos, he says, are inquisi- | tive and fearless, and may be decoyed | easily to approach within a few feet. | It is"common to see one with the limp | body of a lizard dangling from its bill. In the Dominican Republic, Dr. Wet. more reports, the flesh of this bird is given to invalids to produce appetite and is highly prized among the country people as a cure for indigestion. ‘The Smithsonian study of Haitian | birds rtially solves one of the old mysteries of American _ornithology— | what becomes of the chimney swift in | Winter. For a long time, Dr. Wetmore | says, 1t was held by country folk in the Eastern United States that during | the cold weather this bird went into & | state of suspended animation in caves or hollow trees or submerged in the | mud of marshes. Ornithologists. who | knew that no birds hibernate, could not | trace the chimney swift. They knew | that in Autumn it gathered in flocks, | as for a southward migration, and it | was traced as far as Florida, where it disappeared completely. Actual Home Mystery. But in April Dr. Wetmore saw a flock | of about 50 circling over his camp in Haitl, apparently on way North from some wintering place further south. He finds that the bird had been | | seen there twice before. Otherwise | there is only one other record of its| being seen south of the United States, | and the actual Winter home, probably in Northern South America, is about a8 niuch of & mystery as ever | ‘The most fantastic of all Haitian birds, Dr. Wetmore believes, now is ex- tinct, and is known only by akeletons. | He found one rock hollow filled with the bones of extinct animals which, he | believes, was once a nesting place of HE THINKS his haie roots® are dead, because no one has explained to him that hair roots merely become in- one of these monsters. Although the fossil deposits were made from 400 to 2,000 years ago, he points out, this al- most mythical bird may have still been in existence late in the eighteenth cen- tury. 1In 1788 & party of travelers re- ported hearing a nocturnal bird making ‘hollow cries, imitating the human voice,” which may well have been those of the giant owl. Among the more curious feathered creatures he records is the bucaro, which sometimes is kept as a pet and which 1s reputed to be an “animal clock,” uttering its call exactly on the hour throughout the day. Its wings are clipped. and it is domesticated because Of its services in eating roaches and ver- min, Palm Chats Communist. The island also has its bird Com- | munist—the palm chat. These birds, | Dr. Wetmore says, live in little bands, | each group being made up of severai pairs, accompanied by their young and “having as the center of its activities the communal nest, which serves as a resting place when the birds are not searching for food and as & roost at night. From 16 to 20 individuals occupy each nest. Describing this curious nest, | he says “The structure was the size of a bushel basket. There was a mughly‘ defined central tunnel leading through the mass of sticks from side to side and opening to the outside at either end. Each communal structure consists of several separate compartments, open- ing separately to the outside. In each | unit & tunnel led to a central chamber. | Though each was & separate unit, there were roughly defined channels running through the interlacing twigs that could permit the birds to creep about under cover.” WORLD SPACE ROCKET TESTS TO BE RENEWED New Altitude Record of Ten Miles | Expected to Be Made in Vienna in June. VIENNA (NANA.).—The model of | Prof. Oberth's world space rocket at- | tracted so much attention to the Vienna | Spring fair that it has led to the initi- | ation of the Austrian Union for the | Technique of Rockets. Unions of this kind aiready exist in Berlin and in Rumania, and the new one in Vienna will make a number of experiments. Trial flights will be starting shortly, and rockets will be shot off during the festival weeks in June, when it is hoped that a new altitude record of 10 miles will be made.
