The jute industry of India is almost, it not quite, ds important as its cotton, and it is founded upon the discovery, somewhat less than 100 years ago, of 8 Dundee flax spinner named Edwards. He discovered that jute, which is prin- eipally used in.the manufacture of sacking and bags, could be spun into a heavy yarn after batching with whale oil. Today, India is producing 12,000,- 000 bales of jute anmually—the most important section cf her fiber crop. Although cotton is cultivated over an area of some 26,000,000 acres, its value is approximately the same as that of the jute crop from 3.500,000 acres. Half of the jute production is kept in India, {‘mng employment te 400,000 opera- ves. The value of Edwards’ discovery can be seen in the fact that jute occupies only 1 per cent of the total cultiva- tion in Indis. Yet it is worth about $200,000,000. Memorial to Burns' Mother.
