H. PICKETT. While Washington society drifts leisurely through the remaining days of Lent it s preparing for a perfect avalanche of very large and brilliant Easter events—balls, a society’ eircus and lster on the Festival of Nations, which is an all-consuming topic in and out of the diplomatic corps. Dinner parties there are, and many of them continue till far after midnight with dancing, but the program of a 24-hour period now seems indeed mild when compared with the overlapping secial events of the Midwinter, ‘There are always events of far more than usual impertance cropping up. Things like the dinner which the Am- bassador of Cuba and Senora de Far- rara gave for the Speaker and Mrs. Longworth, the dinner party at the Japanese embassy fcr Rear Admiral T. Hatano of the Imperial Japanese Navy and & much favored guest while in this Capital, and similarly important hap- penings in many other embassies and legations and in official circles. A king's birth anniversary, that of His Majesty King Fouad I of Egypt, gives Tise to another meeting of the elite, when on the afternoon cf Thurs- day, March 26, the charge d'affaires of Egypt and his graceful hostess, Mme. Aly Ismail Bey, hold a reception. The legation on Massachusetts avenue is & charming meeting place for ssciety at all times, and for this auspicious event cards have been issued to the cabinet, diplomatic corps and a few others. Younger members of society several hundred strong and of almost every known country are preparing for the Festival of Nations to be put on in Constitution Hall of the National So- clety D. A. R, April 27 and continue until May 2. Mrs. Hoover, honorary commissioner of the Girl Scouts, and Mzs. Gerrit S, Miller, jr., commissioner, are preparing to add some social fea~ tures to the great festival, such as Mrs, Hoover receiving the Scouts and the board of directors and officers of the Scouts at the White House. The Festival of Nations will be a great musical spectacle, with dancing and drama with a chorus of over 150 weices, dancing groups of over 50 girls. ‘The orchestra will be unique in its use of many aimost forgotten instruments, and Girl Scouts will act as ushers in | the theater. Mexico, Canada, Czecho- | slovakia and Japan will join in the | pageant. Mrs. John Allan Dougherty, who suf- |fered an accident while in Chicago some ‘months ago and is recovering from shock and injury, is chairman of the executive board, and Mrs, Fred- erick H. The Thrift Shop on E street, that enterprising -institution which is doing s0 muech for child welfare and which has been the dumping ground for a rare medley of art, literature and gen- eral utility stuff, has a particularly strong lure for the art-loving world when tomorrow they offer for sale some fine etchings done by Benson B.
