More heads of families are out of work than ever before. There are more families with exhausted resources; more with broken morale. More people are sick from privation. There are more people than ever in our cltyu history unable to pay all or part of the cost of hospital and nursing care. There are more broken families and more children applying for admission to orphan asylums. There are more people crowding into character-building organi- zations for wholesome use of unemployed time. GROWTH OF CITY— Washington’s steady growth means a steady increase in the number of persons needing the help of charitable and philan- thropic organizations. IMPROVED SERVICE FOR NEEDY— The health survey and the family survey, recently completed, recommended improvements in quantity and quality of service by member organizations. These improvements are vntally neces- sary for the well being of our fellow citizens. We can’t do much improving in this hard year, but we must do what we can! YEAR-’ROUND OPERATION OF FOR- MER PART-TIME ORGANIZATIONS— The Children’s Country Home, the Bureau of Rehabilitation and the Child Guidance Clinic ran for only part of last year, but will be operated for all of 1931. The Episcopal Home for Children went into new and xmproved quarters on January 1, with 50 per cent increased capacity. The people of our city need this year- round increased service. We must finance it! GIFTS TO BE MADE UP— $100,000 of the Reserve Fund and the $50;000 gift from the In- augural Committee, originally intended for the Reserve Fund, were added to the regular subscriptions of 1930 to meet the need created by unemployment. This additional sum of $150,000 is necessary merely to stay even with last year’s appropriations to member organizations. Several wealthy contributors have died. Others have left the cif Many who gave last year are now out of work and need aid themselves. Those who can give more in this human emergency must do so! GIVE MORE—THE NEED IS GREATER. AMERICAN RED CROSS DROUGHT RELIEF In order to prevent interference with the Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross in raising its $100,000 quota of the Na- tion-wide $10,000,000 drought Relief Fund and in order also to save time of volunteers and cost of duplicate solicitation,” the Community Chest has included the $100,000 for this fund in its budget. This amount must be raised in addition to the sum of $1,850,154.40 required by the Community Chest for local needs. Do your share for local and national emergency by giving one gift to your Community Chest. e Community Chest OF WASHINGTON, D. C. OFFICERS President John Poole Vice Presidents....Mrs. Frederic H.
