: A—=10 ARTIST REVEALS . HOOVER'S TRAITS “Kindliness, ~ Sincerity and 2" Industry Held Chief = Characteristics. jy the Associated Press. ‘The artist who painted President ®Hoover’s most recent portrait says kindliness, sincerity and industry are =the President’s chief characteristics. » Douglas Chandor, English artist, who ®has just completed the picture, be- Zlieves it is “skinsight” rather than in- “sight by which an artist gets into the sthoughts of his subjeots.’ Chandor has Spainted portraits of the Prince of Wales sand many of Great Britain's prime min- aisters. 1 found the President very patient, knowing the many cares he has upon =him. But his rare smile reveals much =of his kindliness and gentleness. Done in Crochet. 1 asked him if he cared to be paint- ®ed with a grin and he said he didn't. I “When I referred to his patience in *posing for three sittings for three- Yquarters of an hour at a time each, he wemarked that he had been done in Steathers, shells and crochet, and he “guessed being painted from iife would emot hurt him. He added with a smile Sthat most people seemed to prefer his | crocheted portraits.” & Mr. Chandor met the President when e was here about a year ago. He #inds him somewhat grayer and a few Smore lines in his face now. 3 Will Go to England. 1 have tried to bring out in the Sportrait the underlying power, industry =and kindliness which 1 sensed despite Zthe shy reserve behind which he hides,” mays Mr. Chandor. “He has a splendid orehead and any one with this fea- wture makes a good picture.” » The artist used double lighting to get the effect he desired, arrangea his =own background, and even designed ‘the Srame for the portrait. = It will be taken immediately fo Eng- Mand for exhibition and will come back o this country in April. Beyond say- =ing that the portrait would not be hung &n the White House, Chandor would sgive no indication of its ultimate desti- ation.
