BERLIN, January 24—A meeting called for “a peaceful debate” between Communist and Fascist orators turned into a free-for-all fight Thursday and 100 persons were injured, five seriously. Disorders broke loose as Walter Ul- bright, Communist member of the Reichstag, reached the climax of his speech. The two factions battled in- side the hall until all the furniture and then ad- journed to the outside for more of it. Police rushed up and ended the argu- ment with clubs. W. C., JANUARY 25, VALUED AT $28.000 Dickens, as Reporter, Wrote Nineteenth Century’s Most Valuable Book. By the Associated Pre: NEW YORK, January 24.—When Charles Dickens turned out the first of the “twenty in nineteen” parts of “Pickwick” in 1836, he little dreamed that one day biblophilers would go over every line of text and advertising and every scratch of the graver with a miscroscope to discover “points” which eventually would make & copy of the full work worth $28,000. It was just two years ago that the Jerome Kern copy of “Pickwick” in parts established the high-water price of $28,000 at auction. Today the eyes of Dickens collectors and bookmen are turned toward the auction next week of the library of B. George Ulizio of Pine Ridge, N. J., at which another perfect “Pickwick” will be offered. Dickens' bibliographer lists “11” re- quired points.for a perfect first edition, of which he says there are no more than 14 in the world, although the later is- sues of the “Plckwick” parts had a cir- culation of more than 40,000 copies. It required two pages of fine print in a catalogue to list the established points of the Ulizio “Pickwick” and in addition some newly discovered points peculiar to this volume. The book once was the property of the late George Barr McCutcheon, a Dickens collector, | who finally traded it because he was unable to include a perfect part IL This defect later was remedied. “Pickwick” has two unique distinctions, Next to the Bible, Shakespeare and the Book of Common Prayer, it is estimated to have had the largest circulation of any English book. Likewise, one copy, now owned by Willlsm L. Elkins of Philadelphia, the first 14 parts of which are autographed by Dickens to his sister-in-law, Mary Hogarth, is held to be the most valuable book published during the Nineteenth century.
