V. C. Command- er Acted as Guard at Bier of Gen. Lee. Funeral services for Gen. N. D. Hawkins, commander of the Maryland'| division of the United Confederate Vet- erans’ organization, who died at his home, 3431 Fourteenth street, yester- j day afternoon after a short iliness, will be conducted at the Francis Asbury M. E. Church this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Rev. Dr. J. J. Rives, pastor of the church, will officiate. The body will be taken to Bedford, Va., for burial. Graduated From V. M. 1. !i:wkln: had long been a promi- nent in all local and general re- \lnlonl of Confederate veterans. In ad- dition he was widely known here as senior member of the District of Co- lumbia Chapter of the Alumni Society of Virginia Military Institute, in which he had long taken an active interest. He was graduated from Virginia Mili- tary Institute with high honors in 1872. At the time of his death he was the last surviving member. of the guard of honor detailed by the Virginia Military Institute commandant to mount guard over the body of Gen. Robert E. Lee at the time of the latter’s death. Born in Bedford County, Vi July 26, 1849, Gen. Hawkins was the son of John P. and Lucinda Campbell Hawkins. As a youth he served in the Confederate Army. In 1874 he was married to Miss Janie Snydor Smith of Campbell County, Va. For nearly 50 years Gen. Hawkins was a prominent farmer and business man of Bedford County, and for 11 years of that time was county superintendent of schools. He moved from Bedford to the National Capital in 1920. Headed Maryland Veterans. Me was a member of the Prancis As- bury M. E. Church here and of the Men's Bible Class of the church. He is survived by his widow, two sons, J. H. and N. D. Hawkins, jr., both of this city; five daughters, Miss Mamie F. Hawkins and Miss Evelyn F. Haw- kins, both of this city; Mrs. J. K. Walker of Bedford, Va.; Mrs. J. M. Mc- Chesney of Abingdon, Va. and Mrs. Henry G. Ellis of Petersburg, Va., and 14 grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Edgar Hawkins of Salem, Va. and John F. Hawkins of Boones- boro, Vi Gen.
