" HUGE SUMS NAMED INPOWER BUDGETS Light Companies Also Plan Heavy Financial Outlays During Coming Year. ipealal Disnatek to The Sar. NEW YORK, January 10.—Electric fight and power companies will spend $894,394,716 for new plant and equip- ment in 1931, Electrical World Sirvey of e idustry: The budget - survey of the in E - locates to fuel-burning stations the sum of $202,394,816; to hy stations, $105,- 381,392; transmission, $114,986418; to distribution and substations, $412,131,- 669, and to miscellaneous items the sum of $59,113,102. ‘The 1931 budget figures include mu- nicipal, local and all other light and power properties and are predicated on actual returns of $819,000,000. Com- parative figures for 1930 expenditures are: For fuel plants, $207,901,458; hy- dro plants, $117,395,384; transmission, $137,084,606; distribution and substa- :lons. 60432,510,218: miscellaneous, $65,- 38,026. Comparisons With 1930. Budget figures for the light and power industry show a decrease in New Eng- 1and expenditures, accounted for by the completion of several large hydro plants in that section in 1930. In the South, also, several new lines and plants have been installed and permit temporary reduction in expenditures. In the North Central, Western and Eastern districts, budget expenditures for 1931 are about equal to those of 1930, thus indicating normal industry growth. Ex- penditures by sections of the country in 1931 will include $301,840,195 for the Eastern States, comparing with $308,- 596,932 in 1930; $171,752,695 in the Southern States, comparing with $194,- 395,948 last year; $284,789,876 in the North Central region, compared with $318,096,822 in 1930, and $135,624,531 in the Western States, compared with $139,800,040 last year. ‘The survey shows that more money will be spent on distribution than on any other item in 1931. This has been true in the last few years and reflects the trend toward underground systems, extensions to outlying customers, mod- ernization and revamping of distribu-~ tion systems, the construction of dis- tribution substations and of new gen- eral office buildings. Expenditures for neration take second place and bid lair to go up faster than those for distribution because of the steady in- crease of capacity demands. Transmis- sion expenditures will be about normal. Six Billions in Decade. “During the period from 1920 to 1930, says Electrical World, “the light and power companies spent a total of $6,007,326,000 for new plant and equip- ment, yet from 1930 to 1940 a reason- able estimate for expenditures is $11,- 400,000,000. The investment per unit of generating capacity for the decade has decreased slightly and is now about $325. The per cent of total time gen- _erating equipment is used has increased from 20 to 30 in the same period. The kilowatt hours generated per unit of capacity have increased from about 1,100 to 2,700 in 10 years. The revenue and investment values per customer have remained about stationary, the present values being about $500 for in- Vestment and $160 for revenue. These figures show that there has been a 1airly uniform earnings basis over the decade despite enormous expenditures and lowered rates, and this has been made possible by greater hours’ use of azulpmen:. dacrel.led unit "D:I‘B of equipment’ and better operaf per- formance, especially in fuel-burning power stations.” mfierm ':!t:bu, gyl every reason to believe that the capital requirements of the industry can be had at reason- able money costs. There are reasons to believe, also, that the hours’ use of equipment wil be increased and that operating costs will decrease. In some measure equipment costs will decrease because of improved quality and changed design. There is also reason to believe, the paper says further, that in the next 10 years distribution 01u19- ment will require the largest capital ex- penditures, with generating station and lnnmg:;on lines following in-order of Estimates for expenditures in the decade 1930-1940 are as follows: Dis- tribution, $4,400,000,000; generation, $3,700,000.000; transmission, $2,250,- 000,000. The remainder of the capital mdmuu in the decade would ;:me miscellaneous expansions, such as office buildings, stores and other items. Michael Winburn, American soap king and philanthropist, who died recently in Paris leaving an estate of $20,000,000, willed $80,000 to the People’s Dispen- sary for Sick Animals in London. The Coast Artill Reserve officers of Washington will meet Tuesday evening at local Reserve headquarters, at 1734 New York avenue. Brig. Gen. Van - $95,000 Advance In Price of Seats On Stock Exchange NEW YORK, January 10.—Just after the close of the market today the New York Stock Exchange an- nounced that a seat on the exchange had been sold for $200,000, an in- crease of $40,000 since the last sale. ‘This represents an advance of $95,000 in I than two weeks, but guig still $190,000 under the 1930 Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., January 10.—The live poultry market holds steady to firm under generally light receipts and a good demand, especially for turkeys, which are showing an increace over last week. Young hen turkeys, 8 pounds and over, are showing an advance of 2 cents at 40 cents a pound, and young gobblers the same at 38, but old hens, as well as toms, not so desirable at 32, while crooked breasts move slow at 25. Mixed colored Spring chickens, medium to large fat, are bringing 23 to 26, but Leghorns will rot bring over 18 to 22, while all poor, thin stock is neglected at 14 and 15. Demand for old hens continues at 18 to 24 for stock weighing 3% pounds and over, but Leghorns will not bring over 16 and 17, and all poor, thin fowl, as well as old roosters, are slow sale at 12 to 15. ppearance met with ready sale at 35 to 37 for birds weighing - 7 pounds and over, but smaller, as well as slips, will not bring over 28 to 33. Choice, fat young ducks in de- mand at 22 to 25, while only a limited demand prevails for geese at 14 to 23, with Kent Islands bringing values. Guinea fowl and pigeons hold steady at 30 to 60 each for the former and 15 to 20 a pair for the latter. Egg Market, Market for native and nearby eggs has a better tone with a fllflyy good demand, but centered entirely on de- sirable fresh gathered eggs, the receipts being moderate of this sort. Premiums over &mtluom are obtainable when they have the size and weigh 57 pounds and over to the case. Brown hennery stock is now preferred to hen- nery whites, but dealers are inclined to take on regular firsts in preference to paying a premium. The market closed today at 30 cents a dozen for nearby firsts and 28 for current receipts, with both hennery whites and browns bringing 31 and 32, ggth:m;sfl pullet eggs are neglected at Receipts of white potatoes have been more liberal the past week, but with a fairly good demand the market holds steady at 1.50 to 175 per 100 pounds, E"x“&}‘m will not bring over 1.25 Eastern Shore Maryland and Vi R 0. v:lsue.u. o weet potatoes are in fairly good de- mand and values show no 4 d:t 3.00 to 4.00 a barrel for No. 1 stock and 2.00 to 2.50 for ungraded, but yams are easy and lower at 2.25 t0 2.35 a barrel.
