PRIGES AR XD N CURB TRADNG Buying Largely Offsets Losses During First Hour, BY JOHN L. COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, August 16.—Nervous Belling gave an irregular tone to the Curb Market today. Buying closing moments of the half-day ses- sion erased most of the losses, and en- abled some to make small gains. To- tal sales approximated 251,700 shares. Most of the pressure was applied to the utilities, which were the most ac- tive spots in the trading, and the group moved uncertainly, finishing irregularly | lower. Electric Bond & Share dipped 3 points, where it found good support to more than recover its loss, but sagged slightly at the close, for a net loss of United Gas A, Niagara, Hudson & Power and Utilities Power & Light | closed steady. Middlewest utilities, American Cities B, Public Utility Holding and American Superpower were fractionally higher. Petroleum shares held firm through- out the day. and most of them were inactive Cities Service worked 15 point lower and closed at yesterday's final price. Guif Oil and Ohio Oil new were firm. Missouri Kansas Pipe Line was active and unchanged. Ford of England moved narrowly and finished 3 lower. Holding fairly steady throughout the morning, Amer- ican Cyanamid B yielded more than a t at the close. Fokker was strong, advancing 17%. Investment and holding eompany shares were dull and firm. INCREASE IN EXPORTS TO RUSSIA IS SHOWN By the Associnted Press. NEW YORK, August States_exports to Soviet Russia_from January to June were almost triple the figure for the same period in 1929, | while exports to all other nations ex- cept Mexico decreased. Department of Commerce figures show Russia bought $64.424,521 worth of American goods between January 1 and June 1, compared with $23,217,477 in the corresponding period last year. For the first fell from $2,229.900,968, the 1929 figure, to $1,730,634,290. SILVER QUOTATIONS. NEW YORK, August 16 (#)—Bar sllver, 35%. By the Associated Press. Adoption of some method of disposing 14 | Of the world’s surplus silver other than by dumping it on the leading markets is the toward which Senator Pitt- man of Nevada is driving in_his ef- forts to restore and stabilize the price of this metal. Since the recent announcement of a series of hearings throughout the coun- try by the subcommittee of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate, dealing particularly with commercial treaties and relations with China, the Senator, as chairman of this committee, has been swamped with ions as to what remedial measures might be applied. While many communications ve lacked value, he has expressed hope that a composite idea might be worked out that will prove beneficial. Suggestion has been received that the surplus might be worked off in the form of a joint loan to certain coun- tries whose ‘monetary structure is on & silver basis, thus diverting a part of the huge oversupply in this country, as well as in England, which disposes of approximately 35,000,000 ounces each year, principally in India. ‘The dumping of surplus silver, Sen- ator Pittman holds, is contributing ma- terially to the depressed conditions ex- isting in China, parts of South America, Mexico and Central America, where silver is used as the medium of ex- change. This statement, with res) to China, is concurred in by American trade attaches, who report the con- sensus among Chinese business men is that the unfavorable silver exch: is an even larger factor in adves affecting import trade than the un- favorable political situation there. Some are of the opinion, it is reported, that the present military activities will die down within a month or two because of lack of finances. The Nationalist government announces a number of lans for construction projects involv- rnr considerable sums of money, but until the civil war is concluded there are no prospects of raising funds on these projects. The first of the Nation-wide con- ferences dealing with the situation will be held in San PFrancisco on August 27, followed bf like meetings at Seattle and Los Angeles. Mill to Resume Operations.
