Other Notables Have Own Special Independence Day programs. HE National Capital was almost bereft of officials over the brief holiday and week end, the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Mel- lon, being the ranking official of the Government in town for the Glorious Fourth. President Hoover joined Mrs. Hoover in their camp on the Rapidan, and Secretary of the Interior and Mrs. Wilbur occupied the “cabinet camp,” within two miles of the presiden- tial camp. The Speaker of the House left Washington immediately after the adjournment of Congress and will be joined in Cincinnati in a few days by Mrs. Longworth and their daughter, Paulina. Washing- ton, however, was not by any means a deserted city on Independence day, for more came here for the holiday than went away. i The possibility that Mrs. Hoover will be able to accompany the President back to the White House this eyening is encouraging news to the many friends made by the Chief Executive and First Lady of the Land during the many years they have lived in Washington. Mrs. Hoover has been greatly missed in many ways, and her presence in | the Executive Mansion will indicate a return to her normal health. Mrs. Hoover has been at the presidential camp for some time recuper- ating from the fall which she had in the White House in the late Winter, and has had one or two guests with her for a day or so at a time. Her younger son, Mr. Allan Hoover, spent some time with her there before going to his new work at Perth Amboy, N. J., and was with his father at the White House over Sunday, when the Chief Executive was unable to join his family at Rapidan. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover, jr, last week celebrated the fifth anniversary of their wedding June 28, their marriage having taken place in California. Mrs. Hoover was formerly Miss Margaret Watson of California. A few years ago Washington society spent the Summer swim- ming—at least, that part of the Summer that kept them here. The delightful pool at Boundary Castle, home of Mrs. John B. Henderson, was kept open for the use of members of the diplomatic corps and any guests they wished to invite. Mrs. Henderson has for several seasons drained the pool before going to her Summer home, at Bar Harbor, and society has been swimming elsewhere. There are many “beaches” on the Potomac and nearby rivers, as well as on Chesa- eake Bay, with the Atlantic Ocean itself not entirely out of reach or week end trips. But the swimming pools in Washington and its environs are comparatively few. Mr. and Mrs. John F. Wilkins have installed a pool on their place, near Rockville, and have entertained guests almost every one of the hot days, as have Mr. and Mrs. Henry Parsons Erwin, who have a pool on their place, Abremont, overlooking Rock Creek Park. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin have gone to their Summer home, on Mackinac Island, Mich., but the latter's mother, Mrs. Delos A. Blodgett, has had guests with her several times when she went to Abremont to swim. Mrs. Blodgett, always an enthusiast at sports, became an adept last Winter at Miami Beach, and not only is an excellent swimmer, but a clever diver as well. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins have had among their guests recently the Speaker and Mrs. Longworth, the former a veritable “fan” for aquatic sports, who was frequently seen, a few years back, in the early morn- ing hours at the municipal pool, near the Monument, where the “Tom | Thumb” golf course was built and opened this.Summer.
