NEW YORK, July 5—A permit for the construction of a short wave radio- telephone station in California has been requested by the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. ‘The completion of the station, the site of which has not been selected, wiil mark the first step in extending trans- oceanic telephone service into the Pa- cific region. The first regular service ‘will be provided to the Island of Oahu, in the Hawailan group, whose inhab- itants are expected to be within the United States voice range by 1932. Thus P radio link to Hawaii will make possible telephone conversation between such distant points as Hono- lulu and Portland, Me., and will extend the talking range from the United States 2,100 miles westward. ‘The radio station facilities at the Hawaiian end are to be provided by R.
