NEW YORK, June 7.—The stock narket finally gave way with a rush to- day to the persistent bear pounding 0 which ft has been intermittently sub- Jected for several days. The time for depositing the class B stock of the Wilfox-Rich Co. under the terms of the merger agreement with the Eaton Axle Co. has been extended to June 18. Chester Beatly, Chhirman of the Roar Antelope Copper | Mines, Ltd., who believes there is no | need to worry about absorption of the new supply of ore being developed in the Rhodesian fleld. The development, he says, will be done along scientific lines, | so that it will not work injury on the world copper market. Ppace experienced since early May. A ‘wide assortment of leading issues de- clined 2 to 7 points, with some of the more volatile stocks recording more spectacular losses. .- Earnings have been the subject of ‘eonsiderable bearish conjecture, as rices were drastically reduced during he early months of ‘the year to clear away unsold holiday inventories. It is stated that the present inventory posi- tion is satisfactory. “Bad News” Circulated. ‘Wall Street was flooded with bearish yumors, as usual duripg sharply declin- ing markets. One report that a large electrical manufacturer was planning to lay off a large number of its employes was emphatically denied. Electrical World reported that equipment business | was_fair, “although the situation as a | whole lacks vigor and snap.” A small ‘The Mexican Electric Cos., Inc. has en formed and incorporated in Dela- are by the American & Foreign Power Co., Inc., to acquire its interests in the Compania Nacional de Electricidad, S. S et NEW YORK COTTON Market Sells Off on Reports of Favorable Weather Conditions. reduction in steel scrap prices at_Chi- cago, after the recent increase at Pitts- \ burgh, was somewhat disappointing to | persons looking for a hardening of iron | and steel prices. Trade reports from | the Youngstown area stated th? Ate(l; mill operations will undergo no further | curtailment next week. Selling was undoubtedly swelled by MNquidation of marginal accounts im- paired by the rather abrupt drop late | yesterday. Forced liquidation, how- ever, was said ‘in brokerage circles to be light, and such selling as was not of professional bearish nature was largely of a'discouraged sort. With business entering ‘its Summer lull, and efforts to0 resume the upward movement in stocks baving met with distinct failure, short-term holders of stocks saw little feason to retain their shares. Total sales for the two-hour session pproximated 2,250,000 shares, more an total sales for several recent five- Bour semions. The closing tone was weal . New Lows Recorded. Several issues were: depressed to new fows for the year, in which United States Steel was conspicuous. Steel sold off nearly 3 points, touching a new 1930 minimum uhder 164!;, com- pared to the November low of 150. Such issues” as Radio. Radio-Keith, American® Can, Johns Manville, Fox, United Aircraft and Standard Gas lost 3 points or more. Shares declining 4 to 7 or more included Allied Chemical, Westinghouse Electric, Air Reduction, Vanadium, Houston Oil and A. M. Byers. Losses of around 10 points were recorded by Case, Auburn and Worth- ington. FEDERAL LAND BANKS' | STOCK REPORT IS MADE By the Associated Press. ‘Total of 98.3 per cent of the capital tock of Federal Land Banks was owned by National. Farm Loan Associations at _the end of 1929. In terms of percentages, the Govern- fment owned but 0.5 per cent of the stock, while: individual borrowers, through the Porto Rico branch of the Federa] Land Bank of Baltimore, owned 10 per cent, and 0.2 per cent was owned by borrowers through agents. In addition, $345 of stock in the Federal Land Bank of Spokane was owned by individual borrowers whose stock in a national farm loan associa- tion was canéeled in connection with the liquidation - of the association, having been issued by the bank ‘girectly to these borrowers. The origiarl capital of each bank $750,000, - or S’ 000,000 for the 12 ,. of which $8,892130 was origi- nally "subscribed by the Government. ‘The latter has been reduced to $325,- 983 at the end of last year through roceeds of stock subscriptions by ational Farm Loan Associations and individual borrowers, and through re- tirement. The selling was not particularly active or ing and closing quotations were at about the lowest. The new October contracts sold off to 14.03 and closed at that figure, with the general market closing steady at new declines of 14 to_18 points. The opening was steady at a decline of 6 to 11 points under selling pro- moted by reports of good rains in the Eastern belt and continued complaints of a poor demand for cotton goods.
