EUROPE THREATENS | THRFF REPRIALS Ambassador Edge Notified of Foreign Attitude Against United States. By the Associaled Press. TOURCOING, France, June 7.—The threat of tariff reprisals by Europe | against the ‘United States was con- | veyed to Ambassador Walter E. Edge last night by Jules Joire, president of Tourcoing Chamber of Commeroe. | Speaking at a dinner given jointly by | the Roubaix and Tourcoing chambers, M. Joire expressed the hope that an understanding between the affected countries would be reached and that | “our industrial regions will not have to group all their strength as they | are determined to do to.defend their rights. Numerous Countries in List. “Numerous countries of Europe,” he | said, “have shown clearly their in- | tention on this point: If the United | States closes their markets they will | be considered justified in doing like- wise.” George Motte, president of the Rou-| baix Chamber, warned Americans re- | garding a policy of “political economy in | Which one may see a tenaency toward & hegemony,* sgainst which you have seen the resistance of those who thought | themselves menaced by it.” He alluded | to the recent demonstration of lacework- | ers at Calais. | M. Motte likened America to a “young | people full of life and fire who, at 20. dash off to conquer the world and find | that the realities of life clip some feath- | ers from their dream wings.” | EDITH SHOEMAKER, Twenty, began her flylng instruction at a Los Angeles airfort and proved such Ambassador’s Brief Reply. The Ambassador made little comment | ! on the criticism other than to reply that | France also has tariffls and that “con- sidering the higher costs and wages in the United States it is a question | whether you are not giving greater pro- tection than we are. -Anyhow, you don't | buy our manufactured products, which | you would if your duty was not adequate | an_apt pupil that after five hours and half she made a successful flight alone. Have By the Associated Press. ATLANTA, Ga. June 7.—Ninety- | elght per cent of the “narrow sheetings” textile mills in the United States are * operating under the 55-hour maximum hours for labor and machinery, Gegrge E. Sloan, president of the Cotton Textile Institute of New York City, told 40 leading cotton mill men of Georgia and South Carolina at an informal meeting here yesterday. Sixty-eight per cent of the 83 “narrow | sheetings” mills_in Georgia, Alabama and North and South Carolina are in- cluded in the text!’e list op-rating under ' the new system, Mr. Sloan said. “This recommendation looking to greater regularity in emnloyment,” Mr. Sloan said, “has gained national recog- nition as the most construct:ve mova- ment that has come wiihin the cotton industry during the past decade. “Mills, North and South, with 23.500,- 000 spindles, or approximately three- fourths of the going mills in the United | States, have approved th's policy of vol- | untary adjustment downward in work- | ing hours which looks more, perhaps, to the welfare of labor than any other constituent part of the industry. “The new schedule is of particular significance in those mill centers where th: combined day and nght run has| heretofore been from 10 to 15 hours per week in excess of the maxmum. now being generally ob-erved, of 55| hours per we:k for the day shift and | 50 houis per week for the night shift. | with all overtime, inclufing the ncon hcur. eliminatzd. | “This latter provi-ion w1l now make t pessible for the mill cmp.oyes to have | their noonday meal with their families and away from the spindles and looms.” PLANE ACCIDENT FATAL Two Men XKilled, Boy Injured, Near Allendale, Mich.
