May 15.—Somewhere in or near New York last night the Chris- | tian K. Cagles—either of whom, any| number of newspaper men will aver, would make a good military strategist— were reunited. More or less officlal reports said the reunion between the foot ball star, who resigned from West Point by request when his marriage came to light, and | the young woman who has been Mrs. Cagle for nearly iwo years took place on the road between West Point and Montauk Point. away out on the tip of | Tong Island, where they were said o be spending the night. They were not to be found at Montauk | Point, however, and switchboard opera- tors refused to put through calls to & | certain suite in the Astor Hotel where | reports had them located. Both of the Cagles won complete vic- tories over the reporters yesterday. Chris made his exit from West Point in an_automobile while Maj. Gen. Wil- liam R. Smith was telling reporters how | foolish he thought it was for the famous halfback to get married against the | West Point regulations and ruin his military career, Meanwhile Mrs. Cagle, insisting that she was still “just plain Miss_ Halle,” arrived in New York from New Orleans. She was greeted by a salute of 21 flash- light guns, while she covered her face, | ed around pillars in the train shed, | ducked into an_elevator, and_finally | raced through the concourse, followed by & train of flashes and smoke. She skipped into a taxicab and left, followed by a couple of reporters who Iater insisted she went to the Astor. From Jackson, Miss., came word that there is a foot ball coaching job wait- ing Cagle at Mississippi A. and M. 1,000 WORDS SELECTED FOR PRESS SPELLING BEE Event Saturday Night Will Be Broadcast—Preston to Be “Schoolmaster.” One thousand especially selected words will be used in. the spelling bee between the Woman's National Press Slub and the National Press Club, which will be broadcast by the National Broad- casting Co., Saturday night from 7:30 to 8:30 o'clock. Before the bee, contestants will be permitted to view the list. If it de- velops . during the contest that the participants have memorized the words an immediate change to an undisclosed" list will be made. Preston, superintendent of Senate Press Galiery, has been chosen “schoolmaster.” Judges will in- clude Senator Tom Connally of Texas, Mrs, Alice Roosevelt Longworth and lina Firm. President Hoover has declined to take part in the controversy between the District Commissioners and local build- ing and labor interests over the award of a contract for the Eliot Junior High | School to a firm of contractors from North Caroling i The Washington Building Trades | Council on May 12 wrote to the White | House protesting against the proposed award and asking the White House to assist in_keeping Washington contracts in Washington. ‘The White House communicated with the District Commissioners and the Commissioners sent up a copy of the statement they issued at the time of awarding the contract. In this state- ment_the Commissioners . pointed out that the W. P. Rose Co. of Goldsboro, N. C., had put in the low bid for .the contract by $24,000 and that under the law the only option they had was either to reject all bids or elsesaward the con- tract to the Rose company, it being financially responsible. It was announc- ed at the White House today that the President would not enter into the con- troversy, but that he had forwarded the protest of the Building Trades Councli to the District Commissioners. ‘The Commissioners had not received the protest at noon today, but since it was similar in content to the objections made at a public hearing on the matter and since the contract has now been awarded, it is not expected that any. thing further will be done in the situa- tion. e W.
